Compensation:

  • In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this position is posted with this position. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.

Role Summary :

The Camp Counselor is the primary caregiver for campers. This position ensures a positive, safe, healthy, enjoyable, and educational experience for each child, teen, alumni, or family member who participates in the Camp Bloomfield residential camp. Counselors plan, teach, coordinate, create, and carry-out activities, guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Counselors also invent new blind-friendly programming, while motivating campers to use non-visual techniques, adapting all activities so they can participate fully regardless of their level of vision and ability. 

Please Note : This seasonal position will begin on May 27th, 2024 and end on August 31, 2024.

  • Attend all mandatory camp staff meetings as assigned by the Manager, including preparatory meetings before each session.
  • Drive agency vehicles to transport campers to and from camp activities as assigned.
  • Assist campers with safely walking and navigating around the activity areas and give support as needed for campers to participate in each activity. Assist campers with getting their lunches and locating the restrooms on site as needed.
  • Carry out and enforce all requirements related to the prevention of Covid-19 according to Wayfinder policies and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health requirements for Day Camps, including daily wellness checks for all campers and staff; and enforcing mask requirements as required.
  • Assist in organizing during any emergency camp procedures.
  • Assist with pick-up and drop-off of campers on arrival and departure day as needed.
  • Meet with campers and their parents as needed for pickups and drop offs.
  • Meet with Manager in order to effectively plan and implement the activities.
  • Assist Manager with the planning, coordination, and leadership of exciting and age appropriate activities on a daily basis in and around the Los Angeles area.
  • Assist with hosting larger outdoor camper picnic events including organizing camper check-in, conducting wellness checks, assisting with food service, assisting campers with navigating the site, and running activities or games.
  • Follow and enforce camp policies and safety with other staff members and campers in that activity.
  • Assist in developing campers’ objectives with the Camp Manager that ensures campers’ needs are being met.
  • Assist in the implementation of the camp orientation especially how it pertains to your program area.
  • Complete all written reports in a timely manner as assigned.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff, including punctuality, cleanliness, clean up, table manners, closing of camp, etc.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis throughout camp.
  • Communicate with the Camp Manager on a daily basis; express any concerns, ideas, special maintenance needs, or safety hazards.
  • Sit and travel with assigned campers throughout the day and coordinate to assist co- counselors with their campers to all for staff breaks as needed.
  • Report any incidents/accidents according to incident reporting procedures and protocols, within designated timelines as outlined in the reporting procedures. Ensure staff is knowledgeable of and adhere to the reporting procedures and protocols.

Qualifications


  • High school diploma
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Valid California driver's license and a minimum of two (2) years of good driving history, and must be approved by the agency's insurance carrier to drive agency vehicles.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certification preferred.
  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of a negative PCT test (taken within 72 hours) before the camp start date
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds
  • At least one year of supervisory experience 
  • Ability to oversee and supervise small and large groups in camp and cabin activities
  • Prior resident camp experience is desirable 
  • Desire to work with children, teens, and adults who are blind, visually impaired, and multi-disabled
