Description

Washington College is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Stewardship in the College Advancement Office. The Director of Stewardship plans, coordinates, and directs all stewardship efforts for the Office of Advancement, Alumni and Constituent Engagement. They will uphold best practices around stewardship with the highest standard of accountability, care and attention to our donors and constituents, and a positive impact on the well-being of the College and our broader community.

The Director of Stewardship will be an integral member of the Advancement team and enjoy a collaborative, lighthearted camaraderie among individuals invested in advancing the College through relationships and resources.

The successful candidate will bring a high level of care and accountability to all areas of their work. They will have the ability to connect with internal and external constituents and set a standard for donor and constituent attentiveness. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail is essential to this position.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for implementing and managing a comprehensive donor relations program to include: supervision of a timely and accurate gift acknowledgment program; documentation of new current restricted funds, endowed funds, and planned gifts through fully executed fund forms and/or gift agreements; regular donor stewardship reports for endowed funds and select current restricted funds and/or gifts; appropriate donor recognition and celebration; and maintenance of associated records and databases to support this work.

Program success is achieved by working collaboratively with Annual Giving, Major Gifts, Institutional Giving, Athletics, Alumni Engagement, Financial Aid, Business Office, Faculty, and others to create and sustain a positive and rewarding relationship between Washington College and its donors.

Gift Acknowledgment:

  1. Implement and annually assess Advancement's donor acknowledgment process.
  2. Oversee time-sensitive execution of production of donor acknowledgment communications.
  3. Conduct an annual assessment of the gift acknowledgment process with partner offices as a means of continual improvement.

Stewardship:

  1. Manage the production of timely, accurate, and creative written reports in various media as appropriate and necessary to keep individual donors informed and engaged. All reports should build confidence in the College and demonstrate that the College uses gifts and grants in adherence to donor intent.
  • Produce annual endowed chair reports, including production and submission of annual Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund (MEIF) grant reports.
  • Issue library/lecture/athletics/building stewardship reports.
  • Design/produce annual templates in support of scholarship/senior awards reports.
  • Produce endowed and non-endowed scholarship reports.
    1. Collaborate with Financial Aid to ensure timely award of named scholarships, solicit thank-you letters from recipients of funded scholarships, partner with Events Director for annual scholarship reception/luncheon.
  • Produce post-Commencement senior prize/awards stewardship reports.
  • Partner with Annual Giving and Major Gifts to develop and implement appropriate stewardship opportunities.

Donor Engagement:

  • Oversee and implement stewardship of The 1782 Society, the College's premiere giving recognition society, in partnership with the 1782 Society Liaison and Director of Events
  • Oversee engagement efforts related to the George Washington Legacy Society, our planned giving recognition group.
  • Create a new recognition system for our largest donors, honoring lifetime commitments of a certain level and up.

EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:

  1. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  2. Preferred three to five years' experience in a non-profit professional fundraising environment; college/university fundraising experience preferred.
  3. Excellent written and interpersonal skills and a commitment to liberal arts education required.
  4. Candidates must have strong organizational skills, be able to work well under pressure, be always mindful of strict deadlines; and be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Attention to detail is required to ensure success.
  5. Experience with graphic design preferred, but not required.
  6. The Director of Donor Relations will be considered a professional member of the Advancement Office and will be expected to act accordingly, conducting projects with limited oversight and handling donor information with confidentiality and discretion.
