BASIC FUNCTIONUnder the direction and supervision of the Preschool Site Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher promotes learning by providing meaningful instruction and recreational activities for preschool-aged children. The Preschool Teacher provides education, care, and supervision in classrooms and playgrounds. This position employs a range of instructional techniques and strategies to enhance student progress by establishing and maintaining a productive classroom environment. The Preschool Teacher assists in the development and implementation of the program curriculum.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSUtilize a variety of teaching methodologies to instruct a wide range of students based on their intellectual, physical, and emotional maturity Prepare appropriate educational development plans for studentsUtilize informal and formal assessments and exercises to evaluate each student’s skill levelProvide guidance and instruction to students regarding self-care, cleanliness and grooming, as needed Encourage student participation in classroom activities such as singing, dance, rhythm, and arts and craftsPerform a variety of housekeeping functions to ensure that the learning environment is in maintained in accordance with District safety and sanitation standards Plan and implement a variety of physical activities to develop student’s gross and fine motor skillsContinuously monitor students to detect signs of overstimulation and fatigue Administer routine first aid to students and contact Preschool Site Supervisor and families, and may need to contact emergency assistance agencies in case of serious injury or illness May assist in cleaning and changing children who have experienced toileting accidentsMay prepare and distribute meals and snacks as part of the nutrition programMay administer medications or other medical procedures (e.g. CPR) after receiving the necessary training and authorization from a licensed healthcare provider in accordance with District policies and proceduresComplete and maintains a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and medical informationPlan, design, and provide meaningful learning and developmental activities for preschool classes, including a program of instruction specifically designed to enhance and develop mental, emotional, and physical capabilities of studentsPlan, coordinate, and maintain a supportive learning environment independently and by working collaboratively with co-workers to develop lessons and learning activitiesDeliver education by using effective oral communication skillsCreate a positive, supportive, and inclusive preschool classroom that promotes teamwork and collaboration among staff, students, and familiesInspect, review, and monitor the learning environment and equipment to ensure that appropriate standards of safety, sanitation, and organization are maintainedPerform other duties as assigned that support the overall program objectivesJOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge and/or Abilities Required: Knowledge of: Goals, principles, and practices for implementing age-appropriate child development and guidance in a preschool environmentPlay-based learning to assist children with individual and group activitiesChild mobility, cognition, and learning stylesArithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading to direct students with learning exercises or projectsCommunication methods that promote patience and sensitivity when interacting with students, staff, and familiesAbility to: Plan and implement an effective and efficient preschool instructional programProvide effective learning activities for children experiencing a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and exhibiting varying levels of intellectual, social, and emotional maturityEffectively assess the educational needs of children and implement appropriate and sound instructional plans and activitiesProvide a warm, attractive, and inviting learning environmentEffectively receive and deliver communication in oral and written formatsPerform routine classroom-related clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office-related machines, equipment, and technologyEstablish and maintain positive, collaborative, and professional working relationships with co-workers, students, families, and the publicWork courteously and tactfully with co-workers, students, and familiesAdapt easily to work assignments, additional priorities, and new proceduresReceive constructive feedback and modify work and behaviors appropriatelyPrioritize and identify needs and solve problems independently as appropriateSuggest improvements to Preschool Site Supervisor, as appropriateSkillfully handle difficult situations using good judgment and tactMaintain a high level of professionalism
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform Medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations – Section 404.1567 “Physical Exertion Requirements”).The physical requirements indicated below are examples the physical aspects of this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. Function effectively in classroom and outside play environments, engaged in work of a moderately active natureStand and walk for extended periods of time (greater than 1 hour) Bend down at child’s level to assist with changing clothes when needed Sit on the floor and assist children during rest time.
