JOB
BASIC FUNCTIONUnder the direction of an assigned supervisor, performs skilled functions and activities in cooking and baking in large quantities at an assigned elementary school site, provides training and work direction to Nutrition Services Worker I, participates in the preparation, setting up, serving and selling of food, maintains food service facilities and equipment in a neat, clean, safe and sanitary condition.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSLeads and participates in the preparation, heating, setting up, serving and selling of food, assembles various ingredients as assigned: serve meals and snacks on servicing lines, sets out prepared foods and restock items as neededAssures leftover food is properly wrapped or packaged for reheat or disposed of at site Records relevant information as neededMonitors employees to ensure safety and sanitation procedures are followedDistribute child care snacks based on program snack menuCollects deposits daily, inputs in Point of Sale (POS) system, records them in a deposit logInventory, calculate and place food and/or frozen food order based on menuInspect, verify and store frozen food delivery in appropriate areaPerforms skilled functions and activities in cooking and baking in large quantities, reviews recipes and menus, determines ingredients and the time required for the cooking and baking of foods, prepares food for students with allergies or special diets according to established proceduresProvides training and work direction to Nutrition Services Worker IParticipates in the preparation of food, involving such activities as preparing sandwiches, mixing salads, grating cheese and preparing fruits and vegetables Assists in maintaining food service facilities equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition, cleans serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers and other equipment, cleans and stores kitchen equipmentWashes trays, plates, utensils, pots, pans, and other equipment as assigned, follows sanitary & safety requirements according to established proceduresPerforms basic cashiering duties including counting cash receipts, making correct change and maintaining simple records, operates a Point-of-Sale (POS) system as assignedPackages and wraps food items according to established procedures and predetermined portion control standard and counts leftover itemsMonitors and records food temperatures to insure safety of products in accordance with established guidelinesMaintains records and prepares reports as required including daily production recordsMaintains inventory and orders supplies and foodstuffs as assigned, participates in the receipt, storage and rotation of food items and supplies in storage areaCommunicates with students, staff and outside agencies to exchange information, and resolve issues or concerns, receives phone calls from parents as assignedOperates standard food service equipment such as slicers, ovens, grill, can openers, food carts, refrigerators and warmers as assignedPerforms related duties as assignedJOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONSSkills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skill to: Skillfully cook and bakePrepare, package and serve quantities of foods and baked goodsOperate a variety of equipment utilized in a food processing facilityMake arithmetic computations with speed and accuracyOperate a food service computer station, count money and make changeKnowledge of: Methods, procedures, and techniques of cooking and baking in large quantitiesBasic methods of preparing and serving foods in large quantitiesBasic food service utensils and equipmentBasic principles of sanitation and safetyInterpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesyBasic mathAbility to: Cook and bake foods in large quantitiesProvide timely service of foods for students and staff at an assigned school siteObserve sanitation practices related to the handling and service of foodWash, cut, slice, grate, mix and assemble food items and ingredientsCommunicate effectively both orally and in writingUnderstand and follow oral and written directionsEstablish and maintain positive and effective working relationshipsPromote team building and a positive work environmentOperate a cash register and make change accuratelyDetermine foodstuffs, supplies and materials requirementsMaintain accurate records and be able to prepare reportsProvide training and work direction to assigned personnelWork courteously and tactfully with co-workers, public and parentsReceive constructive criticism and modify work appropriatelySuggest procedural improvements to superior as appropriateMaintain high level of professionalism in keeping the needs of customers a top priority
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Kitchen and cafeteria environment. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety consideration exist from physical labor and the handling of sharp objects and equipment. Incumbents are subject to hot conditions resulting from ovens and other cooking equipment; also subject to extremely cold conditions when working in walk-in coolers and freezers. Incumbents may use and are exposed to a variety of cleaning chemicals. Employees in this classification primarily work inside, occasionally in heat over 90 degrees with cold below 55 degrees, in direct contact with public, students, and other District staff, with exposure to dust and minor contagious illnesses (cold, flu, etc.), with a high volume of work and tight deadlines, continuous interruptions, changing priorities, and without direct supervision. Protective equipment required: gloves and hairnet. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions. Will be expected to perform heavy work, which involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light and sedentary work. The top three ranks of candidates on the Eligibility List, who are ready, willing and able to accept the position, will be invited to the Final Selection Interview with the hiring authority. The eligibility list will be certified for a period of six months. It will be used to fill current substitute and future permanent openings. Current classified employees are eligible to hold an additional position based on the needs of the District and must be approved by the Human Resources Director.
