JOB
BASIC FUNCTIONUnder supervision, to plan and conduct a variety of play, craft, and game activities in a child care program, including both indoor and outdoor games and special projects; and to do other related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSPlans and conducts recreation, craft and game activities within a specified District child care programEvaluates the skill and fitness levels of the child care participants in determining the appropriateness of games, crafts and project activities. Instructs and leads small groups in game, crafts and team sport activitiesLeads and participates in the conduct of special projects activities, including cookouts, fieldtrips and other high interest activitiesReviews and determines equipment, craft supplies and game materials needed in maintaining an active child care programMaintains appropriate standards of behavior among child care activity participantsReviews activity plans and sets-up and arranges equipment for game, craft, special project, and team sport activitiesParticipates in the planning, organization and implementation of self-directed game activitiesPerforms a variety of cleaning and housekeeping functions in maintaining the facility in a clean, safe and sanitary conditionPrepares and distributes simple meals and snacks for participants Inspects, reviews, and evaluates game activity areas and equipment to ensure that the child care activities are conducted in a safe and non-hazardous environmentReceives, stores and maintains an accurate inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials Interacts with parentsAdministers routine first aid and seeks assistance for serious illness or injury situationsCompletes and maintains simple records and reportsAssists children with homeworkMay be required to work a split shift in divided workday Assists in the feeding and toileting of the child care participants May administer medication under specific District guidelines and supervisionInstructs children in self-care, cleanliness and groomingJOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONSSkills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required: Skill to: Communicate satisfactorily in oral and written formMaintain simple records and prepare complete and concise reports Knowledge of: Basic concepts of child growth and developmentBasic concepts of child behavior characteristicsBehavior management strategies and techniquesRecreation games, craft and team sport activitiesEquipment, materials and supplies used in child care program activities Ability to: Demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and understanding attitude with various levels of child care participantsEffectively plan and conduct child care program activitiesWork cooperatively with adults and childrenUnderstand and carry out oral and written directionsEstablish and maintain positive and effective working relationshipsWork courteously and tactfully with co-workers, public and parentsPromotes team building and a positive work environmentAdapt easily to work assignments, additional priorities and new proceduresReceive constructive criticism and modify work appropriatelyPrioritize and identify needs and solve problems independently as appropriateSuggest procedural improvements to superior as appropriateSkillfully handle difficult situations using good judgmentMaintain high level of professionalism in keeping the needs of customers a top priority
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. Qualified applicants, who meet the minimum qualifications, will participate in a written examination and technical oral interview, which will demonstrate the required knowledge and skill for this classification. The weight percentage of the examination and interview will be 50/50. Those applicants who receive a passing score on the written exam and oral interview will be placed on an Eligibility List. The top three ranks of candidates on the Eligibility List, who are ready, willing and able to accept the position, will be invited to the Final Selection Interview with the hiring authority. The eligibility list will be certified for a period of six months. It will be used to fill current substitute and future permanent openings. Current classified employees are eligible to hold an additional position based on the needs of the District and must be approved by the Human Resources Director. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits. Employees working less than full-time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. The District does not offer a package of insurance benefits to employees working less than four hours per day. The District provides life insurance for employees who work a minimum of 3 hours.
