WAKEFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS is Hiring a School Adjustment Counselor Near Wakefield, MA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Doyle Early Childhood Center is seeking an adjustment counselor to assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional concerns and environmental issues that interfere with the educational process. Working with parents/guardians, school principal, and community-based resources, the school adjustment counselor will implement strategies that promote students’ positive school adjustment. Please note, this position is for the start of the 24-25 academic year. 

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: School Year

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience per teachers’ contract

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA License as School Adjustment Counselor
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in evaluation, interpretation and counseling in individual or group therapy in an educational setting

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Students

  • Identify and assess academic and behavioral concerns through analysis of factors impacting student adjustment including factors in the home, school, and community
  • Develop and implement measurable goals and objectives which address student’s social/emotional needs
  • Provide individual and group therapeutic counseling to students
  • Assist students in identifying, modifying and/or changing behavior that interferes with achievement and school adjustment

Staff/School

  • Provide strategies, support and resources to assist teachers manage social/emotional issues in the classroom
  • Collaborate with school staff and other school district personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning
  • Provide crisis intervention services
  • Conduct classroom meetings, psycho-educational social skills groups, and classroom presentations on identified areas of concern for the students
  • Participate as a member on school based teams to develop interventions for promoting students’ academic success
  • Provide staff consultation to support and promote student participation in the learning process

Family/Community

  • Serve as liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in educational planning for students by encouraging family participation in the school setting
  • Determine and implement appropriate therapeutic strategies to effect changes in behavioral and social interactions of students and their families
  • Help students’ families to identify strengths and weaknesses which promote or interfere with students’ functioning
  • Consult and collaborate with outside agencies, as needed
  • Refer students and/or families to appropriate community agencies
  • Act as a resource person for students, families and staff regarding any adjustment or social/emotional related problems
  • Increase the understanding of teachers, parents, and others in the community of the causes for the problems that students may have

Management

  • Maintain comprehensive records of student progress
  • Ensure the security and maintenance of clinical confidentiality at all times
  • Complete all reports in relation to IEP goals and progress monitoring for students with special needs
  • Fulfill special education responsibilities including: member of evaluation team and home assessments

*All other responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal
