Summary of duties and responsibilities

The Director of Alumni and Affinity Group Engagement is part of the Dean for College Advancement’s leadership team; a team committed to a progressive and integrated advancement program designed to deepen existing relationships, while fostering new and innovative strategies and programming to attract more volunteers and donors to the institution.

Providing leadership to a team of three colleagues, the Director is responsible for the management and creative enhancement of a comprehensive alumni and affinity engagement program. The Director develops, directs, and executes a program that measurably increases engagement and philanthropic support.

Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Develop a best-in-class alumni and affinity engagement model aimed at delivering programming, events, and communications that inspire active involvement and support.
  • Lead, organize, inspire and coach a team of alumni and affinity engagement professionals. Build a culture of mutual accountability and high-performance while mentoring and coaching staff through open and honest communication and leadership by example.
  • Lead, schedule and execute the support of the college’s long-standing alumni organizations, the National Association of Wabash Men and the Society of Wabash College Class Agents, and work with both groups to maximize both the success and impact of their work.
  • Ensure coordination of all alumni and affinity group engagement efforts across the college and collaborate with key partners (communications and marketing, career services, athletics, enrollment management, and student life) in support of the mission of Wabash College.
  • Serve as an ambassador of Wabash College utilizing the regional Wabash Club structure as well as other relevant groups and organizations.
  • Nurture and expand the College’s nascent programming aimed at engaging women, parents, families and military personnel (active and retired) while developing metrics to evaluate their engagement success and return on investment.
  • Monitor and manage all relevant budgets and expenditures ensuring full compliance with Wabash College policies and procedures.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.At least seven years of senior management experience, preferably in a not-for-profit organization. Prior experience in managing alumni relations activity in a college or university is preferable, but not required.
  • A history of managing a diverse group of professionals in a collaborative and imaginative style, with a preference for background in building, rebuilding or otherwise transforming an organization.
  • A broad-based knowledge of how to manage and motivate volunteers, effective communications strategies, and participative planning models.
  • Strategic planning skills marked by creative thinking, extensive research and analysis, critical reflection, and practical execution.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to serve as a key resource and principle advisor to the Dean for College Advancement and other College leaders.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion.
  • Belief in the mission of the institution.
