Volusia Flagler Family YMCA is Hiring a Head Lifeguard Near Ormond Beach, FL

Guided by the mission of the YMCA, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for the protection and the overall safety of the patrons at the aquatic facility as well as direct supervision of the Four Townes Family YMCA aquatics staff. Lifeguards have a moral, professional and legal obligation to prevent accidents and incidents by enforcing the rules and regulations of the aquatic setting.

The YMCA is looking to start hiring for a Head Lifeguard in preparation for its seasonal pool opening in April 2024.

Core Functions:

Relationship Building – Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand individual’s goals and interests, and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.

Customer Service Excellence – Provide excellent customer service and positive communication to all customers, including but not limited to, members, participants, guests, volunteers, and fellow employees, by listening first and responding to their needs in a safe and effective manner.

Role Model – Model and encourage the development and practice of the YMCA character values (Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility), performing all assigned duties with energy and enthusiasm. Abide by all personnel policies and guidelines, follow all reasonable directives issued by leadership, and uphold rules, regulations and safety standards associated with the YMCA.

Annual Support Campaign – Provide support for the annual campaign and other special events when possible and as directed.

Risk Management – Remain familiar with risk management procedures in the YMCA facility, which include but are not limited to: swimming pool rules and procedures, current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, child abuse prevention, and understanding specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.

Job-Specific Functions:

  • Provide direct supervision over aquatics staff, including but not limited to creating and communicating staff schedules, training and providing feedback, addressing safety concerns, and modeling the proper policies and procedures for aquatics staff
  • Responsible for the safety of the aquatic facility patrons and the prevention of accidents and aquatic incidents. Scan zone vigilantly using the 10 x 10 rule and perform rescues and lifesaving techniques when needed. Render first aid as needed throughout the facility.
  • Be inspection ready in staff uniform, with whistle, rescue tube and strap in ready position, pocket mask and in proper location for programming.
  • Respond to members’ inquiries and concerns.
  • Assist in maintaining the overall general care and cleanliness of the aquatic facility. Keep drains clean, gutter free of debris, pool bottom brushed, and overall deck cleanliness.
  • Inspect aquatic facility on a daily basis and report any unsafe conditions and equipment.
  • Maintain and check water chemistry, daily weather conditions and incidents and report to supervisor.
  • Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in accordance with the emergency action plan (EAP), including whistle codes. Practice EAP regularly. Understand specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.
  • Complete all assigned records and reports.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Get substitution for shifts when unavailable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and/or Mental Requirements:

  • Able to swim 300 yards, tread water for at least two minutes using legs only, surface dive head first and feet first and swim underwater at least 15 feet.
  • Able to sit for extended periods of time including in an elevated chair and in the elements.
  • Sight – Observe all assigned zones of the water area and be ready to perform rescues.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environment with background noise.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively to emergency personnel over phone and in person.

Job-Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Talents

  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguard rescue techniques.
  • An active and dedicated interest in creating a safe pool experience for all.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Good judgment under pressure, with the ability to make timely and sound, informed decisions.
  • Energetic interpersonal skills with willingness and ability to build and retain relationships with a diversity of children, parents, members, guests, volunteers and staff.
  • Knowledge of personal limitations and using other resources for relief and assistance.

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent

Experience: 1 - 2 years of previous lifeguard experience required. Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Certs/Licenses: YMCA Lifeguard or nationally recognized Lifeguard certification (American Red Cross, Ellis, Beach Lifeguard or Boy Scouts of America); CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED, and First Aid Certifications required

Criminal background check and drug test are required.
