Job Location: Washington St Campus - Portland, OR
Position Type: Full Time
Salary Range: $21.79 - $29.04 Hourly

Position Summary: The Recovery Mentor position is responsible for providing mentoring services within the Drug Court Model and other programs at Volunteers of America Oregon. This position is responsible for alcohol and drug recovery support and assertive case management for participants engaged in the START Court Program. Participants come from diverse backgrounds, family structures and cultures, and we seek culturally responsive mentors who have experienced similar situations during their own transition to a crime free life.

Education, Training & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Recovery Mentor certification (CRM) or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of resources and programs in the Multnomah County area.
  • CPR certification, or completion of certification within 30 days of hire.

Competencies:

  • Ability to work with pre-contemplative individuals while providing quality support with compassion and empathy.
  • Ability to develop rapport with diverse group of clients, staff, and START Court partners while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Knowledge of addiction and the recovery process.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries in challenging situations.
  • Crisis intervention/de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Computer literate functional ability with Word and Outlook Express.

Additional Eligibility Requirements:

  • Reliable vehicle, active driver’s license, current insurance, and ability to pass our insurer’s driving standards and criminal background check.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide recovery support, individual and group mentoring services, and introduce program participants to 12-step and other community recovery programs/meetings.
  • Coordinate regular events and link mentors to services and resources in the Multnomah County area.
  • Assist participants to obtain food stamps, food boxes, identification, and birth certificates.
  • Aid participants in the final phase of treatment to find safe long-term housing.
  • Organize and manage program participant’s weekly schedules.
  • Help participants develop resumes, teach job readiness skills, and connect them with job development programs and employers.
  • Monitor and assist program participants to follow through on a case management plan designed by the individual’s primary counselor.
  • Work in a friendly, collaborative manner with community partners, including frequent communication with each participant’s primary counselor and parole officer.
  • Use personal vehicle to transport program participants to appointments, recovery activities, and to obtain resources when appropriate.
  • Follow VOA policies and procedures and all relevant state and federal regulations and standards.
  • Attend and actively participate in individual and group supervision, weekly staffing and other meetings as assigned by the clinical supervisor.
  • Perform CPR in case of emergency.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned by Clinical Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibility: Position is not responsible for supervision of other employees.

  • Environmental Conditions: Work is in a professional treatment clinic setting and involves local travel to attend meetings, appointments and events.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position; 40 hrs. per week, Monday thru Friday with some weekends and special events hours.
