Vertex Partnership Academies is Hiring a High School English Teacher Near Bronx, NY

About Our SchoolVertex Partnership Academies is the first-of-its-kind network of International public charter high schools dedicated to equality of opportunity, individual dignity, and our common humanity. Vertex student scholars are immersed in a culture of democratic discourse guided by the four cardinal virtues of Courage, Justice, Wisdom, and Temperance. Vertex was founded in the fall of 2022 in the Bronx, NY, with 110 students in the 9th grade. Each Vertex student scholar will choose either: (1) the International Baccalaureate DiplomaProgramme that prepares them to enroll and thrive in premier colleges and universities in the country or abroad; or (2) the International Baccalaureate Career-relatedProgramme that prepares them to graduate with a professional credential and directly enter the labor market with skills in one of four initial industry areas: (a) computer science; (b) health and medical services; or (c) construction/architecture, and (d) music video production. 

Vertex Partnership Academies is a Candidate School* for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education that Vertex Partnership Academies believes is important for our students.

Culture of Continuous Improvement

  • Calendar
    • Professional Development for 3 weeks before meeting students
    • Instruction for students for 1 week in August before the fall session begins
    • Student led family conferences three times a year (no instruction on these days)
  • Professional Development and coaching 
    • Weekly professional development (focus on collaboration/ common planning time/reflection) guided by practices used by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to determine National Board Certification
    • Opportunities to receive specialized International Baccalaureate training and certification 

Responsibilities

  • Contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the academic team and Vertex staff
  • Construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept driven, inquiry-based teaching and learning
  • Attend to high impact instructional practices (cognitive lift, appropriate demand of task, student centered discussions, clear formative assessment, and feedback)
  • Build caring relationships and rapport with students and staff
  • Participate in community-based projects and school field trips
  • Ensure all assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant, and appropriate feedback to students 
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management 
  • Proactively communicate with families about student learning 
  • Supervise students’ individual Personal Projects and service requirements
  • Lead an advisory group of students in a specified grade level
  • Enthusiastically participate and contribute thoughtfully in Professional Development

Qualifications

  • Experience teaching reading/understanding challenging texts, supporting claims in argumentative essays, comparing/contrasting literature, and other key analytical skills
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Education or relevant subject
  • Master’s degree preferred 
  • Teaching Certificate preferred (middle or high school)
  • International Baccalaureate experience preferred
  • A passion for working with adolescent learners, flexible attitude, and a sense of humor
  • A passion for education and teaching English
  • Flexibility of approach and a collaborative style
  • A commitment to viewpoint diversity, open inquiry, and experiential-based pedagogy
  • A willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaborative skills

This role is a full-time, in-person opportunity. As an employee, you are eligible for a benefits package, inclusive of paid time off, paid holidays and a retirement plan. The salary range for this position is $67,000-$108,000, which will be based on the candidate’s years of full-time lead teaching experience and credentials.
