High School English Teacher
About the American Dream School
The American Dream School (ADS) is a dual-language (Spanish/English) 6th to 12th-grade middle and high school in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx. We offer a project-based program, in tandem with our innovative dual-language approach, that supports our students in becoming bilingual and biliterate. The mission of the American Dream School is to develop academic excellence in both Spanish and English, preparing students to excel in college and become leaders in their communities.

About the Position
The American Dream School is seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English) motivated, and engaging teacher who is committed to serving English Language Learners and cultivating bilingualism and biliteracy. The ideal candidate has a passion for both reading and history. He/she will see this position as an opportunity to teach high schoolers not only how to become successful readers but how to actually enjoy history. This candidate will be able to create an environment where abstract concepts and discussion are obtainable for all students (including a large ELL population) and be able to merge historical content with modern themes in todays literature.

Responsibilities

Classroom Preparation

  • Create instructional lesson plans and activities that cultivate active engagement and a meaningful learning experience
  • Assess changing curricular needs and implement plans for improvement
  • Distribute materials and assist in other time management/organizational duties
  • Type, file, and duplicate materials

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Building a classroom culture in which students love literature
  • Teaching students to engage with compelling and complex texts
  • Instructing grammar, style, vocabulary, and rhetoric through scholar writing of authentic creative and informative pieces
  • Guide students in preparing to be successful on NYS Common Core English Regents Exam
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups
  • Assist in the distribution, collection, and grading of tests and homework assignments
  • Observe students' performance, and record relevant data to assess progress
  • Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students progress or problems
  • Provide extra assistance to students with special needs including physical help
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Create meaningful interim assessments that will help drive instruction
Classroom Management Responsibilities
  • Supervise and manage students in all spaces, upholding ADS core values, rules and policies
  • Instruct, maintain, and monitor students in the use and care of equipment and material
  • Maintain accurate records and create reports

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with breakfast/lunch duties
  • Follow a co-teaching model
  • Create and maintain bulletin boards to showcase student work
  • Access students DRA level quarterly
  • Perform other assigned duties

Special Education Responsibilities

  • Create an annual goal for students IEP
  • Implement and track the progress of annual goals of students IEPs as it pertains to your content area
  • Write progress reports (Present levels of Performance) for students as requested
  • Participate in yearly IEP conferences
  • Establish appropriate modifications and goals for each student

Position Requirements:

  • Bilingual Spanish/English; preferred
  • New York State Teaching Certification in Special Education 7-12, required. (Accepts active US State Teaching Certifications)
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Maintain confidentiality and meets deadlines, complete assignments with consistent accuracy;
  • Tech-savvy; familiarity and experience with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google docs/drive;
  • Effective verbal, writing and listening skills.

Salary is commensurate with Education, Years of Experience, and New York State Teacher Certification Status.

Job Types: Contract, Full-time

Salary: $59,119.00 - $125,489.00 per year
