Position Summary and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications, the Assistant Director of Advancement Communications Content provides writing and editing support for print and electronic communications, including executive-level speeches, and management of Advancement Communications projects in support of Vassar's Office of Advancement.
Responsibilities:
  • Writing fundraising appeals, fundraising materials, newsletters, social media content, and invitations, under the direction of the AVP for Advancement Communications.
  • Writing speeches requested by the President of the College, the President of the AAVC, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Vice President of Advancement, and others to include speakers at regional and international programs and dedications to celebrate gifts being made to Vassar.
  • Assisting with the writing of proposals and letters to key donors to the College.
  • Assisting the Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications with project management of department and cross-department communications projects.
  • Collaborating on assignments forwarded from other Vassar offices outside of the Office of Advancement, to include writing articles for college publications and social media channels.
  • Copy editing of multiple daily broadcast emails and other print materials as needed.
  • Collaborating with the Associate Vice President for Advancement Communications on the creation of advancement communications strategies for Vassar.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in professional writing and editing, preferably within a nonprofit or higher education setting. Speech-writing experience is also preferred.
  • Proven writing and editing skills, with the ability to create concise content and review materials in a timely manner.
  • Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Mailchimp, social media platforms, and Microsoft Suite.
  • Proficiency in project management tools, including Asana. Demonstrated ability to manage projects across multiple teams to a successful completion.
  • Strong familiarity with adapting content for the many forms of communication the department uses for messaging throughout its audiences (emails, print materials, social media), along with experience with writing for segmented audiences.
  • Ability to quickly learn the tone and style of the College for use in communications, along with crafting speeches based on the individual speaker and audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, strong organizational skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively manage deadlines and multiple, competing priorities
