TITLE: Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM)

AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Patient Care Services - Specific unit/department
RESPONSIBLE TO: Assigned Nurse Manager
JOB OVERVIEW:
Under general direction by the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) utilizes the nursing process to prescribe, prioritize, delegate, and provide safe, therapeutic allocation of nursing resources to patients/families. The ANM makes independent judgments, decisions, and take action regarding a wide range of routine and complex staffing and unit workflow issues. The ANM collaborates with appropriate disciplines to coordinate continuity of patient care from admission through discharge in support of the medical and nursing plans of care.
PREREQUISITES:
Licensed to practice registered nursing in the state of WA.
Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
Two - three years of professional nursing experience, including demonstrated skill and preference for adult education (preceptor, charge nurse, unit based skills, etc).
Proficient in EPIC.
Nursing certification eligible - certification preferred
TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer certification preferred
7. Current American Heart Association BLS/CPR for health Care providers Certification
QUALIFICATIONS:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ANM performs specific leadership functions related to clinical practice, education, and/or management as delegated by and in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. The ANM provides leadership for unit and departmental activities that promote:
Delivery of quality nursing care
A culture of service excellence and acts as role model for patients are first behaviors
Effective problem solving and communication
Fiscal responsibility and accountability for unit performance
In addition, the ANM provides support to the unit management team for the assurance of a strong workflow processes and infrastructures that promote efficient and effective quality patient care. Support is provided to all staff any day and any shift as determined by need/demand. Emphasizing patient safety, staff safety, organizational integration, and service excellence the ANM provides leadership and resources that promote the following:
Assists in delivering effective staffing schedules that take into account staff experience, skill mix, preference, and core matrix.
Efficient and effective timesheet/payroll management processes and practices
Timely clinical problem solving and communication of clinical issues at all levels (peer, staff, management, physician).
Effective interdisciplinary and interdepartmental communication, collaboration and service coordination using TeamSTEPPS methodology.
Effective integration of new technology and organizational initiatives
Effective management of staff practice and professional behaviors using effective interpersonal skills and Just Culture methodology
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Staff Competency Assessment and Development
Partners with appropriate CNE/CNS to plan, implement and evaluate unit based orientation program for permanent, temporary, and contract staff utilizing a performance based development approach. Promotes continuity in competency development from core to PCS central to unit specific orientation.
Facilitates individualized orientation process for newly hired staff (RN and support staff).
Evaluates orientees' baseline attention to training, demonstrated skills, attitude and philosophy fit with VMC mission and values; records and reports concerns to unit manager.
Registers, tracts, and records the completion of unit orientation and competency completion for various staff levels.
Collaborates in the development/revision of clinical competencies.
Collaborates with unit leadership and CNE/CNS in the development and validation of unit specific competencies.
Acts as Master Preceptor: trains, mentors, and evaluates effectiveness of unit based preceptors
Evaluates assigned staff at prescribed intervals (6 months, annual) after approval by manager
Provides "just in time" feedback to staff regarding clinical, interpersonal, and communication performance
Involves manager for staff who resist feedback or who fail to improve performance
Participates in interviewing and makes recommendations on candidates for hire being mindful of baseline clinical, behavioral, and communication competencies.
Acts as a resource for CEU interpretation and guidance
Staff Continuing Education
Promotes and supports a high functioning environment that fosters continuing learning and professional development.
Partners with CNE and CNS to plan, implement and evaluate educational offerings designed to enhance the delivery of quality care and safe practices. (In-services, CE, equipment education).
Partners with CNE to plans, implements and evaluates educational offerings designed to enhance staff leadership and operational decision making (Charge, Preceptor).
Assists nursing staff in identifying and meeting their ongoing educational goals.
Utilizes theories of adult education and interactive learning in formal and informal trainings.
Participates in programs that support staff education and development (CPR instructor, core curriculum, ANM orientation, and consortium).
Participates in the development of educational modules and training plans.
Participates in ongoing area specific training (e.g. skills days).
Registers, tracks and records staff's participation in mandatory continuing education.
EPIC unit super-user - acts a resource to staff for enhancement education and practice integration
Consultation/Support of Quality/Safety Priorities
Promotes the use of central educational, quality, and patient safety resources (CNE/CNS consultants) to support quality patient care.
Participates in departmental policy/ procedure development and interpretation for members of the heath care team.
If Manager designates, can act as Co-Chair of Unit Based Committee and promotes evidence based nursing practice
Collaborates with Clinical Training Coordinator unit based student placement.
Operations/Work Flow
Role models collaboration and best practice communication strategies.
Assists in staff schedule in collaboration with Nurse Manager, PCS Business Analyst and centralized scheduler.
