US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is Hiring a Student Trainee (Cyber Security) Near Washington, DC

Duties

This vacancy is for a Fall 2024 internship. This positions is in the Office of Electric Reliability.

While the duties of a Student Trainee (Cyber Security), may vary depending on office placement, some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Performing basic technical analyses of limited complexity, of both existing and proposed CIP Reliability Standards.
  • Preparing written products that are all clear and reader focused, concise, and comprehensive. Contributing to both formal and informal presentations, written and/or oral, within the team, Division, or Office.
  • Analyzing less-complex filings and supporting data to ascertain whether the actions proposed to enhance reliability are just, reasonable, not unduly discriminatory or preferential, and in the public interest

Qualifications

Eligibility: In order to be eligible for our Internship Program, you must:

  • Be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a half- to full-time basis (as determined by the educational institution); AND
  • Meet the definition of a student throughout the duration of your appointment; AND
  • Meet the qualification standards (e.g., series and grade).

You can qualify based on your education, ORone full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level, OR have a combination education and experience. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience with cyber security and industry standards used to protect critical energy infrastructure.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including any volunteer experience.

Education

This position has an education requirement (as referenced in the “Qualifications” section) and therefore, transcripts and/or proof of enrollment are required. The duty location of this position is in Washington, DC. Based on our current operating status, FERC employees are teleworking as opposed to coming on-site. When it is determined that our agency will be moving to the reopening phase of our Reconstitution Plan, the expectation will be to physically return to the office in Washington, DC. Telework days and any waiting period for eligibility will be determined at that time.
