Duties

  • Supervise, mentor, and instruct employees on crewmember duties.
  • Plan action and direct utilization of fireline resources on less complex fires.
  • For more complex fires, direct assigned suppression operations and recommend and implement tactical strategy on attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires, building or patrolling firelines, etc.
  • Supervises regularly assigned firefighters a minimum of 25% of the work time and may provide situational leadership and supervision for additional firefighters based on the fire assignment.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of training programs (mandatory, formal, and informal) to comply with policy, regulations, and employee development.
  • Ensures crew members and equipment for the specific fire assignments or daily work assignments are in a state of readiness for the assignment or initial attack.

  • Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

Qualifications

This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Wildland Firefighter (Assistant Veteran Handcrew Superintendent) position and requires the selectee to meet minimum National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) qualification standards prior to being placed into the position. Qualification standards are from the Veteran Crew Operations Guide 2023:
  • Crew Boss (CRWB) AND Firing Boss (FIRB). I will provide a copy of my IQCS master record or equivalent documentation as instructed in the vacancy announcement.
  • In addition to the NWCG qualifications the following training courses are also required for this position: S-260 Interagency Incident Business Management AND L-280 Followship to Leadership AND L-380 Fireline Leadership. I will provide a copy of my IQCS master record or equivalent documentation as instructed in the vacancy announcement.
You must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management (qualifications to be considered eligible for this position (currency not required).
To qualify for the GS-08 grade level: One (1) year of creditable specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: Training others on (federal, state, and/or local cooperators) wildland fire suppression strategies and tactics pertinent to initial attack, large fire suppression actions, and wildland urban interface/intermix situations; performing many wildland firefighting technical specializations such as tree felling, helicopter operations, fireline leadership, or initial attack incident command, which are used in fire suppression and prescribed burning; Serving as a Strike Team or Task Force Leader to specialty resources (hotshot, heavy equipment, engines, etc.) or assigned to supervise fire suppression by multiple resources under the most adverse conditions of climate, fuels, and terrain.
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c)(CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37 unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement. If over the MEA and you are not a veteran, proof of prior covered service must be submitted prior to employment. Acceptable proof consists of SF-50s showing beginning and ending dates of covered/creditable appointments and copies of approved letters based on individual claims.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
Physical Demands: Arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as, but not limited to, extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, jumping and twisting, prolonged standing,walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds.
Work Environment: Forest, range and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and may fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (e.g., boots, hard hat, gloves, flame resistant clothing).

Education

This position falls under the Wildland Firefighter job Series, 0456. There are no Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR).
There is no substitution of education for experience at this grade level.

Additional information

Relocation/Recruitment Incentive: This position is offering a Relocation/Recruitment Incentive, 25% of the annual salary. To be eligible for a Relocation Incentive, you must be a current Federal Employee and the selectee must be employed with the Federal Government and the selectees current duty location is more than 50 miles from the duty location of this position.
