University of Utah Healthcare is Hiring a Nurse Apprentice-Huntsman Cancer Hospital BMT Near Salt Lake, UT

Overview

This department moved to the beautiful new Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers in June of 2023.

We would love for you to be a part of this expansion!

The new Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers will expand clinical space at Huntsman Cancer Institute by 220,000 square feet. It will also increase HCI’s clinical care capacity by 50%. Once completed the eight-story patient care facility will include:

  • An entire floor dedicated to breast and gynecologic cancers
  • A new endoscopy center
  • An expanded wellness and integrative health center
  • 48 inpatient rooms
  • A new blood and marrow cancer treatment space
  • An oncology faculty workspace

Exterior walkways and sky bridges will connect The Kathryn F. Kirk Center to the current cancer hospital and research space.

The 5K Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Inpatient Unit at Huntsman Cancer Institute is a 24-bed inpatient unit that primarily cares for patients with hematologic malignancies i.e. leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, etc. We care for patients who are undergoing stem cell transplantation, CAR-T Cell Therapy, or other types of immunotherapy, including clinical trials. We also care for these patients as they go through various stages of their cancer journey, including active treatment, complications, symptom management, a curative approach, or end of life. This patient population is complex and tends to have high acuity. Therefore, RNs have a 3:1 patient ratio, and are supported by HCAs with a 5:1 patient ratio. Our unit is fast-paced and provides lots of opportunities for critical thinking, learning and growth. Our RNs are skilled in IV chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration, central line care, stem cell transplantation, and CAR-T cell therapy. We typically have a longer length of stay, as our patients can stay inpatient for an average of 3-4 weeks. This uniquely allows our team to have the opportunity to build connections with our patients and their loved ones, which is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. We work closely with many interdisciplinary teams to ensure our patients are receiving well-rounded care from all viewpoints. Our service lines are highly involved with the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) at HCI, and our staff have the chance to see research go from “bench to the bedside,” including Phase 1 trials. What a great opportunity to be involved with cutting—edge science that is changing cancer care today! We have a supportive and inclusive team with a culture of community, where teamwork is highly valued. We share a common goal of providing compassionate care to oncology patients and positively impacting their experience. In June 2023, our unit was relocated to the new Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers at Huntsman Cancer Institute. This expansion has allowed our team to further specialize in the care of Bone Marrow Transplant patients in a beautiful new clinical space that includes a family kitchen, family laundry room, occupational therapy gym, and other amenities that enhance the patient and caregiver’s experience.
