Salary
Salary Range: $90,000-$100,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions
The Director of Business Intelligence serves as the chief data scientist and administrator for the Carlos Alvarez College of Business. This position will provide advanced leadership, development, and direction for the data administration of the college. This position will serve as a senior advisor and decision support strategist to the Dean and leadership team including (1) creating requisite databases and knowledge base to provide business intelligence for decision making, (2) aligning data analysis and monitoring with strategic initiatives, (3) directing, reporting, forecasting and performing analysis to ensure college operations have maximal impact in meeting our key performance indicators (KPIs), and (4) directing efficient operations through effective supervision and professional advancement of unit staff and efficient workflows and transfer of information.
Serves as an essential member of the college leadership team, with responsibility to oversee all aspects of data collection, analysis and reporting for a college with more than 7,900 students, faculty and staff. This position is responsible for the design, oversight, efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance of data collection, analysis, and reporting for the college.
Typical:
  • Participate as the Alvarez College of Business liaison in support of institution level data governance activities.
  • Design and maintenance of databases and knowledge bases for the college.
  • Determines and oversees the creation of standing data analysis and reporting.
  • Oversees and manages the implementation of new and existing projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational Activities :
  • Oversees the collection, storage, management, quality and protection of data.
  • Develops the College data governance infrastructure strategy, including policies, roles, responsibilities and processes. Maintains integrity and compliance with college and university policy.
  • Monitor the overall effectiveness of the College data governance structure.
  • Leads, develops and implements databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize efficiency and quality, including the design and development of database information for decision-making, evaluation and accountability purposes.
  • Assesses the effectiveness, reach, and impact of college strategic initiatives by identifying, tracking, and reporting of KPIs; regular monitoring of KPIs for the college and department, including reports to support developing strategies to address trends.
  • Develops data procedures and policies and works closely with various departments to collect, prepare, organize, protect and analyze data assets while ensuring that the organization meets industry best practices
  • Provides and coordinates collection and processing of data for various types of ad-hoc reports
  • Identify, analyze and interpret data trends or patterns in complex data sets and present to stakeholders.
  • Collects and organizes data to complete external data requests, including ranking surveys such as the U.S. World News Surveys.
  • Prioritizes and resolves problems by analyzing situations and determining solutions. Communicates with affected parties and follows-up to ensure satisfactory resolution and implementation of systems to avoid repeated issues.
  • Maps business rules and functions onto data needs and solutions.
AACSB and University Accreditation :
  • Responsible for the accurate data preparation, review, and submission of AACSB accreditation surveys.
  • Responsible for the accurate data preparation of other accreditation and internal or external survey reporting requirements.
  • Leads efforts to coordinate, review and to ensure accuracy of all accreditation data reporting, including but not limited to academic assessment and assurance of learning (AoL) data reports.
Executive Leadership and Support of Broader Alvarez College Initiatives:
  • Serves as integral member of the college leadership team. Participates with the executive team to develop and implement policy decisions and initiatives.
  • Assists leadership in leveraging data to prioritize business and information needs.
  • Responsible for developing and governing data and information strategies to drive business decisions and growth.
  • Actively participates in the university strategic management process as well as college strategic management process.
  • Identifies, implements, and tracks performance relative to KPIs.
  • Serves as primary liaison for all data governance and monitoring related items.
  • Engages in special projects as assigned by the Dean and senior leadership team
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Business Analytics, Economics, or related field and five years of increasingly advanced experience in data analytics, data governance, strategic project execution, with at least three years in a supervisory capacity. PhD from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Business Analytics, Economics or a related field may substitute for up to two years' experience.
  • Experience with data cleansing and processing, storytelling and visualization.
  • Experience in database administration and project management.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with business intelligence tools, programming languages and statistical computing packages for designing and analyzing databases (Python, R, Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, and/or related).
  • Technical expertise regarding data modeling, database design development, data mining, segmentation, classification, and predictive analytics techniques.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate with a variety of individuals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, especially in relation to interpretation and reporting of results from data analysis.
  • Team-player, driven and disciplined. Demonstrated attention to details.
  • Excellent project and process management skills.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Strong computers and data summarizing/reporting skills particularly in MS Excel, Tableau, or other data visualization tools.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize deadlines, meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
  • Proven data processing/manipulation and analytical skills.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Independent decision making and problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain tact, diplomacy and discretion in all matters.
  • Proven ability to be a self-starter/independent worker with motivation.
  • Must be able to relocate to Texas prior to date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Business Analytics, Economics or a related field.
  • Similar experience at a metropolitan university of similar size and profile to UTSA.
  • Programming & coding capability (e.g. C , Java, Excel Macros, or creating subroutines for R/Python).
  • Ability to work with ill-structured data and data merge/splicing from asymmetric sources.
  • Functional knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems, and On-line Analytical Reporting Tools.
Working Conditions
This position will be primarily located:
Hybrid-Regularly: This position will require working both remotely and on campus (approximately five or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments as work modality is subject to change.
  • Normal office conditions.
  • After hours and weekend work is required on an occasional basis to meet deadlines.
  • Requires travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events on campus for short periods of time routinely and off-campus. travel for a duration typically 5 days or less occasionally.
  • Requires use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
  • General instruction and supervision from Alvarez College of Business Associate Dean.
