Position Title: Lead Communications Specialist

Organization: Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester

Location: Rochester, New York, United States

Job Summary:

The Lead Communications Specialist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies to enhance the reputation and visibility of LLE and the University of Rochester as premier institutions in laser technology, fusion, and high-energy-density science. This role involves proactive engagement with national and international media to promote significant scientific research, as well as creating compelling content for various print and digital platforms. The Lead Communications Specialist will provide strategic counsel to senior leadership, position them as thought leaders, and ensure alignment of communication efforts with organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Implement Communications Strategy:
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to understand communication priorities and audience needs.
  • Identify key messages and narratives to effectively communicate research, achievements, and societal impact.
  • Create comprehensive communication strategies with measurable KPIs aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Executive Communications and Thought Leadership:
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the laboratory's leadership, offering strategic guidance on communication matters.
  • Position the laboratory and its leadership as thought leaders in scientific research and innovation.
  • Identify speaking opportunities and events to showcase expertise and achievements.
  • Assist in crafting key messages, speeches, presentations, and talking points for high-impact engagements.
  • Content Creation:
  • Translate complex scientific findings into accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Develop and deliver strategy-based communications through print and digital channels.
  • Produce multimedia stories for internal and external platforms, including website, newsletters, and social media.
  • Coordinate with other communication professionals and partners across the University to share and amplify content.
  • Media Relations and Outreach:
  • Establish and maintain media contacts regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Execute targeted media pitches to secure coverage of research initiatives and achievements.
  • Identify media opportunities and provide media training and support to scientists and researchers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders including government agencies, funding bodies, and academic institutions.
  • Performance Measurement and Reporting:
  • Establish metrics and KPIs to evaluate communication effectiveness.
  • Monitor and analyze communication activities, track media coverage, and prepare regular reports for senior management.
  • Apply analytical skills to improve content performance and delivery.
  • Recommend and execute improvements to current channels and develop additional channels to achieve communication objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field required.
  • 7 years of relevant experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understanding and compliance with HIPAA requirements required.
  • Proficiency in writing and editing content for target audiences.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Pay: $75,650.00 - $113,464.00 per year
