Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the UNC Center for Galapagos Studies is to solve environmental challenges to ensure healthy island ecosystems for future generations. The center is the coordinating unit for all work and associated efforts related to the Galapagos Islands conducted by Carolina faculty, students, and staff. The center’s vision of globalized learning seeks to transform research, education, and outreach at Carolina by collaborating with international partners whose ideas and research activity flow between UNC-Chapel Hill, USFQ, Galapagos Islands. The CGS also manages the International Galapagos Science Consortium and other collaborative scholar programs involving academic institutions and government and non-government organizations.
Additionally, the CGS leads and manages all UNC-Chapel Hill operations and activities that occur at the Galapagos Science Center (GSC), located on San Cristobal Island in the Galapagos Archipelago of Ecuador, in association with our collaborating partner the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. The GSC is the only institution of its kind in the Galapagos, and it represents a special opportunity to make the world a better place by working to understand island ecosystems and threats to sustainability.
The goals of the CGS are aligned with the mission and goals of the University included in the strategic framework Carolina Next. Using a global mindset to address big societal questions, the CGS conducts foundational research and creative practice. The center provides exceptional educational opportunities to solve environmental challenges for the benefit of North Carolina and beyond, and to reaffirm UNC-Chapel Hill as a preeminent university solving global environmental challenges of importance to science and society.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
This position will be responsible for helping design and implement web, social media, and other communication strategies for UNC’s Galapagos Initiative as managed by the Center for Galapagos Studies. This work will be conducted in conjunction with other CGS faculty and staff members
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Experience in a writing, communications, or PR-related field (including but not limited to Journalism & Mass Communications, Communications, English), or experience writing about science topics for a general audience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Basic understanding of social media platforms and digital marketing.
  • Microsoft Office, Writing, Speaking, and Technology/Computer skills.
  • Experience with WordPress, Facebook and Twitter management.
  • Physical or environmental science coursework; passionate about science, health, and technology topics is also sufficient
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and effectively manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt quickly
  • Photo/image and PDF editing experience
