University of Massachusetts Medical School is Hiring a Research Associate I Near Worcester, MA

Overview

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Yemini Lab (www.yeminilab.com) in the Department of Neurobiology at UMass Chan is looking for a Research Assistant. Applicants interested in a path to graduate school are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Yemini lab performs systems-level investigations of neuronal development, analyzes whole-brain activity and behavior, and develops novel neuroscientific methods. The position will provide exposure to multiple aspects of Neurobiology and experience in state-of-the-art techniques (www.yeminilab.com/home/tools).

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) or designee, the Research Associate I provides operational support to the laboratory. The Research Associate I will perform research experiments as defined by the PI.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform laboratory experiments and may be responsible for a single research project
  • Utilize all software relevant to experiment and equipment used
  • Interpret data, form conclusions and decide on next steps under the direction of the PI or designee
  • Maintain accurate records, may modify protocols with the approval of the PI or designee
  • Review literature, publications and grants relevant to assigned projects
  • Record results according to established lab, sponsor & university protocol
  • Assist with performing data analysis and/or mathematical computations
  • Maintain a detailed lab notebook according to lab practice
  • Present findings at lab/group meetings
  • Monitor laboratory supply levels and order as noted
  • Prepare and label buffers, media, solutions, etc.
  • Assist with and comply with all safety regulation and infection control standards
  • Train on IACUC, IRB, EHS, Radiation safety protocols
  • Comply with all applicable state, federal university, and sponsor policies and agreements
  • Provide support with identifying problems and challenges, propose resolutions, implement appropriate solutions
  • Provide support with drafting standard operation procedures in compliance to EHS regulation specific for the lab
  • Perform other duties as required

The primary responsibilities comprise of:

  • Conducting research. The majority of the time will be dedicated to research that is carried out independently or in conjunction with other lab members.

  • Training in cutting-edge genetics, molecular biology, imaging, and neurobiology techniques.
  • Authorship on publications.
  • Working with an inclusive, interactive, innovative, and happy group of nematode (C. elegans) and mouse researchers.
  • Participation in an exciting and diverse department focused on neurodegeneration, repair, development, systems biology, glia, sleep, addiction, and circuits. Research within the department is carried out in many types of animals that range from invertebrates to mammals.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological or Natural Science, or equivalent experience
  • Basic understanding of lab safety and protocols
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to analyze data in a quantitative and objective manner.
  • Ability to work in a team environment

Additional Information

We welcome candidates who:

  • Are transitioning from undergraduate biology to graduate school or have significant research experience; mature researchers are welcome and encouraged to apply
  • Are willing to commit to a long-term position of at least 1.5 years, and preferably longer 
  • Have worked with molecular cloning techniques, tissue culture, mice, or C. elegans; however, this is not a prerequisites
