The University of Hawai'i at Hilo is among the most diverse four-year public university in the United States, located in a geographically diverse and mixed-use island community. The UH Hilo School of Education serves as a resource to area educators teaching in a culturally rich and diverse setting and conducts as well as guides action research to expand knowledge of teaching and learning, providing high quality, integrated, inquiry-and-place-based undergraduate and graduate programs. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Teach undergraduate and graduate campus-based and web-based courses in Education Foundations, K-12 Social Studies Methods, with an emphasis in teaching history, and other areas as needed and assigned.
  2. Advise students.
  3. Supervise teacher candidates in schools.
  4. Engage in curriculum development, program assessment and accreditation.
  5. Engage in scholarly work and publication.
  6. Perform service to the institution and discipline.
  7. Engage in partnerships with schools, education agencies, out-of-school-time (OST). programs, and the Hawai’i Department of Education.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. at the time of appointment.
  2. Minimum of three years in K-12 working in educational settings.
  3. Demonstrated ability to teach courses in social science teaching methods or methods in related disciplines.
  4. Evidence of the ability to establish a productive research agenda or publications.

Desirable Qualifications: 

Evidence of:

  1. Successful experience in working with various schools in Hawa’i K-12 systems or other school systems with diverse populations.
  2. Successful experience with school accreditation or program evaluation.
  3. Ability to teach teacher education courses in history at the elementary level.
  4. Ability to teach foundational courses in Education Studies.
  5. Experience mentoring, coaching or supervising students.
  6. Experience with culture-based or place-based teaching.
