Together with the UC campus libraries and our other partners, we expand the academy's capacity for innovation, knowledge creation, and research breakthroughs, and enable the University to produce a measurable impact valued by the state, the nation, and the world. The CDL has four core programs: the UC Curation Center (UC3); Shared Collections; Discovery & Delivery; and Publishing, Archives, and Digitization. UC3 supports leading-edge products (Dryad, DMPTool, Merritt, EZID), as well as initiatives in the areas of research data management, data publication, persistent identifiers, and digital preservation. The primary user base for CDL programs and services include UC faculty, students, and library staff.
The CDL is a unit within the Academic Affairs division of the UC Office of the President, has a staff of 75 and is located in downtown Oakland. Applicants who wish to work onsite, hybrid, or remote within California will be considered. This position is not eligible for Visa transfer or sponsorship.
Position SummaryThe UC3 Associate Director, reporting to the UC3 Director, will be an enthusiastic member of a dynamic organization applying advanced product management concepts, techniques, and objectives to plan, create, maintain, enhance, and operate robust services responsive to the evolving needs of UC stakeholders. The UC3 Associate Director plays a pivotal role in UC3 by shaping the trajectory for UC3 through the development of long-range strategic plans and roadmaps. The position also leads strategic conversations and engagement with national and international initiatives within the digital library space. He or she will collaborate and consult closely with the UC3 Director and the UC3's Development Manager, as well as with CDL's central services groups (IT, Web programming, UX team, etc.). This position will manage a team of UC3 product and service managers to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality services and project outcomes, the ability to grow these services in accordance with CDL strategic objectives, and the capacity to respond to new opportunities and systemwide mandates. The UC3 Associate Director is responsible for evaluating new opportunities that advance UC3's work, as well as emerging industry trends, to determine if they can be adapted for increased utility for UC3 initiatives in the areas of research data management, data publication, persistent identifiers, and digital preservation. This position will set the direction for the product team across these areas, ensuring that they are leading edge in their design and implementation and that they address the needs of users within UC and across the State of California.
Key Responsibilities- 25% Planning: Rationalizes service planning and evaluation activities to promote strategic and deliberate product development and to create capacity within the group to take advantage of new opportunities. Leads the product team in developing effective practices for regularly assessing services and projects to recognize when those activities should be modified or ended.
25% Service/Product Quality: Develops and oversees the continued implementation of strategies for consistency, reliability and efficiency across all services and projects. Ensures the creation and use of best practices for operational standards, customer support, stakeholder communication and engagement, product/project development and roll-out activities, documentation, QA, reporting, and assessment.
- 25% Group Priorities: Works with the UC3 Director and UC3's Development Manager to align program activities with organizational priorities maintain an understanding of development team priorities and capacity, and to evaluate strategic opportunities.
- 15% Management and Supervision: Provides guidance to the product and service managers following established policies and management guidance. Ensures that staff activities are aligned with CDL's strategic priorities, and that sufficient time is allocated for professional development opportunities.
- 10% Collaboration: Collaborates with CDL colleagues to develop organizational best practices across programs and services. Participates in groups and initiatives at UC systemwide, national, and international levels.
ExperienceRequired Qualifications
- Min 10 years of experience with development and delivery of online information services in educational, publishing, library and/or research settings, including experience establishing product development plans; working with technical and non-technical staff; helping users with online information services and/or products.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing an Information Technology organization.
Skills and AbilitiesRequired Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of user-centric software development practices and core digital library technical concepts and issues, including various standards related to research data management, digital preservation, data publishing, data metrics, and persistent identifiers.
- Experience in the oversight and creation of technical and end-user requirements documents and high-level system designs.
- Able to evaluate existing local systems and vendor-supplied systems against requirements, make well-researched recommendations regarding purchasing and modifying third-party systems or building local home-grown solutions, and develop and coordinate product/project implementation plans.
- Experience in ensuring reliable production services; leading implementations of new, enterprise-wide applications; creating and assuring the adherence to best practices that allow for continued development and feature deployment while maintaining expected service levels and user experience.
- Excellent analytical abilities combined with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to create clear and concise documentation, reports, proposals and presentations covering both technical and non-technical topics for audiences with varied levels of technical knowledge.
- Experience in managing scholarly communications systems and services with multiple, distinct stakeholder groups, including experience with both vendor and locally developed applications.
- Commitment to proactively promoting and embracing diversity in ideas, people, and organizations, and to contributing to an inclusive, equitable working and learning environment.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, paired with the demonstrated ability to create and execute product/development plans.
- Demonstrated ability to directly supervise both technical and non-technical staff for product development and for daily operations.
- Ability to provide leadership and create consensus where possible.
- Deep and broad knowledge of trends and current issues related to scholarly communication, data repositories, digital preservation, and other spheres of existing and emerging library activities.
