University of California Merced is Hiring a Laborer (Limited Pool) Near Merced, CA

Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is Step 1: 18.90 - Step 11: 23.02. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 1: $18.90/hr.

Job Closing Date

Review of applications will occur as openings become available. Candidates will be selected for temporary employment in various departments as positions become available. This position is reopened every six months so please re-apply if you remain interested in the position. This position will close on 6/30/2024.

These union positions are represented by the bargaining unit AFSCME: Service - SX.

Please note: These are temporary positions.

About the Job

This is a temporary position for the purpose of supporting the General Services Department during periodic increases in workloads. Primary duties would include supporting all aspects of the Moving & Events operation including day, night and weekend events. Provide set up, monitoring and recovery support in multiple locations on and off campus. Responsible for limited furniture moves for University Faculty and Staff and related work orders for simple installation or removal of wall decorations or furniture. Sets up and employs public address systems, chairs/seating, tables, stages, scaffolding and other equipment in support of a wide range of events throughout the entire year.

Ability to follow proper safety standards and work procedures for Moving & Events personnel. Performs work and assignments for Moving & Events operations; properly uses moving and lifting equipment, PA and electrical systems, and power & hand tools. Follows ergonomic guidelines when using equipment and tools aimed to reduce employee injuries. Helps improve efficiency by working as a team and observes campus energy conservation policies.

Assists emergency cleanup projects, helps maintain inventory of equipment and supplies. Secondary responsibilities would include support for other General Services responsibilities such as campus grounds keeping projects. Performs work assignments to campus standards. Operates assigned University vehicle and Facilities equipment such as fork, scissors and boom lifts. Responsible for neatness and security of assigned work space. Works effectively with campus event coordinators and team members to accomplish work assignments with the highest level of quality and efficiency. Understands and follows UC and departmental policies and procedures. Exercise sound judgment in performing work and operation of University vehicles and lifting equipment.

Qualifications
  • High school or a General Education Diploma.
  • Prefer one-year minimum of demonstrated experience in all aspects of moving & event support and unskilled maintenance projects.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with peers, employees, supervisor, and department/UC staff in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of correct lifting and moving techniques.
  • Strong customer service ethic.
  • May be required to work weekends and multiple shifts.
  • Must have valid Class C California Drivers License.
  • Position is subject to the California DMV's "Pull Notice System" and an offer of employment is contingent upon a satisfactory driving record.
