Position description
The department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Specialist in the rank of Jr. or Assistant Specialist to investigate how gene expression regulation drives the process of meiosis. The position is within the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, world-renowned for major discoveries in biology and promoting and supporting diversity, inclusion, and belonging in education. This position reports to Professor Gloria Brar.
The Brar lab uses a combination of systems biology, genetics, and cell biology to uncover basic principles in gene expression regulation. We focus on meiosis, the conserved process by which gametes are made and a highly dynamic differentiation program. In this position, you would assist graduate students on a project aimed at understanding how gene expression changes drive changes to meiotic cells. We primarily use budding yeast as a model system, leveraging its high synchrony of meiotic progression, which is unparalleled. As a Specialist in the Brar lab, you would join the Brn lab team, a highly inclusive and collaborative environment.
The Specialist will perform a variety of methods, including those listed below:
  • yeast cell culture, transformation, growth assays
  • meiotic timecourses
  • immunofluorescence, western blotting, qPCR
  • bacterial transformation, bacterial growth, plasmid purification, restriction enzyme digestion for analytical and cloning purposes, agarose gel purification of restricted bands, ligation of DNA fragments.
  • Independently design cloning strategies and troubleshoot cloning projects including the capacity to validate proper cloning.
This position will be expected to assess, plan and carry out such activities, and as such it is ideal if they have experience in these areas.
Detailed records of experiments performed, conclusions made, and communication of results orally and through lab notebook records are necessary. Daily record keeping in laboratory notebook (including the generation of written protocols for new assays learned), graphing cumulative data generated interpretation of data and drawing conclusions preparation for presentation at lab meetings. Attendance at weekly lab meetings. Background reading/research necessary to understand projects.
The Specialist will need to work collaboratively, learning and sharing techniques and knowledge with other members of the research team. They will also need to organize and perform several experiments in parallel on the same day.
This position provides full benefits.
University of California Academic Researchers are exclusively represented by the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW).
The department is interested in candidates who will contribute to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
