Departmental Overview
The mission of the Department of Residential Life is to facilitate residential student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley, and to promote personal well-being and respect for the community needs of all residents. Our residential and apartment communities are built on five intentional learning goals including Academic Success, Community Engagement, Diversity & Global Conscientiousness, Identity Exploration, and Holistic Wellness.
The Community Director position residents within Residential Life is charged with planning, developing and implementing programs, services, activities and processes for students in their non-academic life at the University Village Family Housing facility residential students at the University of California, Berkeley. This includes residential life, public service, student conduct, gender identity and sexual violence, leadership development, student organization advising, and other areas. University Village family housing facility is a 975 apartment international family housing facility serving approximately 3000 individuals, including over 900 children and approximately 954 families.

Responsibilities
Provides guidance and direction on most complex operational issues and problems. Responsible for the development of a community of 950 families and the functions of student conduct, leadership development, counseling, crisis management and emergency response, alcohol, drug and wellness education, leadership, and administration. Serve as a subject matter expert on issues related to college student development, including work with identity-based and ethnic groups, such as theme programs. Collaborate with departmental, divisional and campus partners on developing, coordinating and assessing educational programs and services grounded in student development theory that address the community living and transition needs of populations that reflect the UC Berkeley student profile. Partnerships include both internal (e.g., Academic Program Coordinators, Resident Faculty) and external (e.g., Dean of Students Office, Center for Student Conduct, LEAD Center, Career Services, and New Student Services) partners, as well as other offices (e.g., College of Letters and Science) involved in programming for supporting students as they progress through Cal. Counsels and evaluates employee performance. Provide formal performance evaluations for paraprofessional staff members each academic semester. Recommends employees for promotion, corrective action, hiring, and separation when appropriate. Monitors employee performance and provides direction and assistance. Supervise and train paraprofessional staff members. Conduct hall staff meetings on a regular basis. Provides training to subordinates. Facilitate regular staff development sessions designed to provide additional training and team building for staff in the unit. Assume a collateral assignment in such areas that support Residential Life, RSSP and divisional initiatives. Such assignments include Conference Services managed housing (e.g., Summer Sessions housing, Summer Bridge program), Hall Staff selection and training committees, curriculum development and teaching, and other special committees and assignments. Respond on-site to manage emergent crises involving resident students, both during and outside of University business hours. Serve as a member of an on-call crisis response rotation on nights and weekends. Provides health and safety training, guidance on safe work practices, provides proper equipment, observes work practices and correct methods and investigates accidents. Works in a safe and responsible manner while not putting self or others at risk. This includes complying with applicable policies and regulations; using personal safety gear; observing warning signs; learning about potential hazards; and reporting unsafe conditions.
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence. Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn about Student Affairs/Student Life specialization. Critical thinking, reasoning and persuasion skills. Leadership skills. Knowledge of risk assessment principles and the ability to evaluate risks and likely consequences. Intercultural competence and the ability to apply concepts of diversity, inclusion, and social justice to an educational setting. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn about common computer application programs. Understanding of and/or ability to learn about University rules and regulations. Interpersonal skills and communication skills (written and verbal communication, active listening). Skills in service orientation. Organization skills and the ability to multitask. Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. At least 2 years paraprofessional experience or 1 year professional experience in secondary or higher education setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a multicultural University or Family Housing Experience working with diverse student populations.
Education/Training:
Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, ethnic studies, social work, or related field.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 4-year, 100% full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This position is exempt, live-on, and is paid monthly. The annual salary for this role is $60,000.00, along with an unfurnished apartment.
