Departmental Overview
UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a fully accredited comprehensive university health service providing primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. The Clinical Services Program within the UHS includes urgent care, primary care and specialty clinics, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, and a major medical insurance plan.
Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to enable students to get the most from their educational experience, minimizing the impact of illness, injury and emotional distress on their academic careers. Medical care and wellness programs for faculty and staff are designed to meet their occupational health needs and minimize lost work time. These visits generate ancillary encounters with the Radiology, Clinical Laboratory, Physical Therapy and Pharmacy departments. Responsibilities
PATIENT CARE AND TRIAGE
Using the nursing process develops, interprets, implements, evaluates and documents a plan of care for patients consistent with UHS policies, procedures and guidelines. Patient care may be provided in person, by telephone, and by electronic means.
A. Employ triage technique, in person, by phone and electronically, to identify existing or potential health problems (physiological and psychological) and formulate a plan of care.
Establish a priority of care for patients and route patients appropriately. Demonstrates confidentiality, sensitivity and concern during all patient interactions.
Recognize symptoms and diagnostic test results that deviate from normal. Follows through on abnormal findings in a timely manner, using appropriate resources.
Consults appropriately with MD/NP or supervisor.
Documents nursing assessments and interventions clearly, legibly, accurately, concisely, and consistently in accordance with UHS policy.
Provides appropriate patient teaching, health education and related counseling.
Provides clinical support to Customer Service staff working with students who are working to complete TB and immunization requirements.
B. Provides direct patient care utilizing nursing skills and protocols.
Initiates diagnostic tests as appropriate and according to applicable protocol.
Administers medications and treatments.
Assists in the preparation and treatment of patients.
Takes medical histories, examines, assesses and counsels patients on basic health problems according to protocol, e.g. URI, allergy testing, pregnancy testing, etc.
Provides case management, maintains tickler file(s) systems to assure continuity of care.
C. Urgent Care, Travel/Immunization, Specialty Nurses must meet the specific focus Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of their units as outlined in attachments. The Clinical Nurse II job description includes the Clinic Advice Nurse Focus.

Maintains patient records appropriately including confidentiality, legibility and completeness of notes. This includes written and electronic records.

Knowledgeable of operational, administrative, business, and personnel policies.
Detailed knowledge of Clinical Services policies and procedures.
C. Works collaboratively with Health Services staff following a team approach.
Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability as health care practices and related technology change.

Required Qualifications
Education/Training, Licenses:
3 or more years of experience in clinical nursing.
Current and valid California State RN license.
Current BLS Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
1 or more years of clinical nursing experience in immunization or travel preferred.
Experience in a Public Health setting.
Experience in Travel Medicine.
Experience providing counseling for immunizations to adults.
Experience in case management of latent and active TB patients.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide routine immunizations based on CDC and CDPH recommendations.
Knowledge, skill and ability to monitor vaccine storage and handling guidelines.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide immunotherapy injections and counseling.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide to TB risk screening and perform TB testing.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide therapeutic injections as ordered by UHS clinicians.
Knowledge, skill and ability to initiate diagnostic tests (titers or TB blood tests) under standing orders.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide appropriate emergency interventions.
Knowledge, skill and ability to provide Travel Medicine consultation and appropriate immunizations and medications specific to destination and activities during travel.
Ability to anticipate patient flow problems or scheduling conflicts and intervene effectively.
Ability to anticipate vaccine and supply needs and order as needed to meet sufficient supplies to meet patient demands.
Education/Training, Licenses:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

This is a per diem position with variable hours.
The per diem hourly rate for this position is $70.15.
Per diem positions are not eligible for the UC benefits plan.
