University of Alaska - External Careers is Hiring an Instruction and Research Services Student Assistant Near Anchorage, AK

The UAA/APU Consortium Library supports the educational and research programs of the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University as well as serving as a major research library for Southcentral Alaska. The Instruction and Research Services Department at the Consortium Library is responsible for teaching students how to use the library and its resources and services.

Duties:

Work at the Information and Research Help Desk and in the computer lab providing excellent customer service, technology troubleshooting, and answering basic reference questions in-person, via phone, and online chat.

Instruct patrons on the use of library and computer lab equipment (printers, copiers, scanners, microfilm reader, etc.) and the productivity software available through the library and computer lab workstations. Examples include Microsoft Suite, Google Docs, PDFs, and many of the programs that are available in the computer lab.

Provide assistance to library patrons with account logins for the computers, email, Blackboard, UAOnline, and other university systems.

Help patrons with the printing process including wireless, adding money to cards or online accounts.

Assist patrons with using the library’s website, catalog, resources, and information about services. Refer advanced questions to on-call librarians or to subject specialists.

Assist library patrons with navigating the university website and finding information about the university programs and services.

Effectively identify the patron’s information needs in a manner that puts them at ease. Use effective listening and questioning skills.

Report service-related data by using transaction tracking software.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Applicant must be able and prepared to:
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Communicate clearly and accurately in writing and verbally with patrons and staff.
- Analyze situations, solve problems, troubleshoot technology issues.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and effectively use the Library and university websites, the library catalog, and basic library resources.
- Assist library patrons with laptop and desktop computers, printers, scanners, microfilm machine, and software on library and lab computers.
- Quickly learn and assist others with new software and technologies.
- Work independently, after training, without direct supervision. Self-motivation, initiative, and diligence are essential.
- Continue learning on the job, to ask questions, and to ask for help when needed.
- Manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously and work with frequent interruptions.
- Be reliable and dependable.

Required & Preferred Experience:
Required: Minimum of one year of library experience; or a minimum of one year of work experience requiring customer service and technology experience.
Preferred: Familiarity with library resources and services. At least two semesters (24 credits) of college are greatly preferred.Required Education:

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

To be eligible for student employment at UAA, each applicant must:
A. Be enrolled in the UA system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
B. Have been enrolled in the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
C. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, or approval from the chancellor or the chancellor’s designee.

Hours:

Although personal preferences will be considered, the Consortium Library has extensive hours and student assistants will be expected and scheduled to work around their classes within these hours:

Monday­-Friday 9am to 9pm

Saturday-Sunday 12pm to 6pm

Student assistants will be scheduled to work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during semesters, with the possibility of working during the summer and winter breaks.

Salary Information:

$12.77 per hour.
