Position Summary:

Native Student Services (NSS) is seeking a math tutor to support Native students with their Math GERs! Native Student Services is a productive office with a small, but great team! The student Math tutor candidate will have an opportunity to develop and learn new skills while working with students, faculty and staff. The student must have the ability to be proactive and work independently and deliver tutoring services in a culturally responsive manner. Expectations are high, hours flexible, and schedule is consistent. We are a very student friendly office and our goal is to help support students through academics and cultural activities. We encourage you to be a part of our team in making a difference! Federal Work study eligibility preferred.

Ability to work assigned hours, possibly including some evenings, to understand written and verbal instructions, to communicate effectively, to take direction and work as part of a team. May be working remotely, in person, or a combination of those.
Candidate must have the ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Candidate must be in good disciplinary standing.
Candidate must have experience with basic computer operation (word processor, email,
spreadsheets). Must possess excellent problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Requires attention to detail, and customer service skills. Experience with handling confidential records desired. Ability to work in a multitask environment. Familiarity with MS-suite applications, particularly MS Word Experience working with Native peoples and/or knowledge of Native cultures.

Ability to effectively explain and demonstrate basic mathematical concepts using a variety
of teaching and rhetorical strategies in a culturally responsive manner.
Have previously completed general education requirement (GER) level courses in Math.
Successful completion of a semester of coursework preferred.
Effective communication skills.
Capacity to work with students and diverse backgrounds.
Ability to work weekends and evenings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a 3.0 average in Math coursework.
Must have successfully completed at least one 200-level math course.
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
f. Position reappointment is contingent upon successful progress toward degree completion and performance evaluation

Position Details:

This is a Student Assistant 2 position paying $13.03 per hour, up to 20/hours per week.

The university system started as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in Fairbanks, later renamed the University of Alaska. That first year, the campus was a single two-story frame building and had just six students. The school was renamed the University of Alaska in 1935. In 1954, Anchorage Community College (now known as the University of Alaska Anchorage) was incorporated into the University of Alaska.
