Security Officer

Job Description
Position is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors to UNIS’s Manhattan campus and for protecting the assets of the school. The position will be responsible for screening all individuals seeking access to the school and its property. Position will also be responsible to assist in maintaining order and discipline at UNIS’s Manhattan campus, prevent crime, assist in investigating violations of law and school policies, and enforcing existing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and secure campus environment that is conducive to learning, working and collaborating with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
The position is a Full Time position, consisting of a 35 hour work week, and may require evenings, weekends and holiday work schedules based on the needs of the school.
Essential Duties The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Monitors and/or patrols assigned posts/areas of the school building, grounds and parking lot to prevent unauthorized access to school property, and to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school policies.
2. Meet and greet students, staff and public in a friendly, courteous and positive manner.
3. Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities on and immediately adjacent to school property.
4. Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
5. Assists with student issues as required.
6. Enforce UNIS’ Access Control and Visitor Management policy.
7. Assists in conducting scheduled and unscheduled emergency drills, including fire drills, lockdowns, lockouts, shelter in place, and other emergency situation drills.
8. Maintains security records, logs and reports at assigned post.
9. Communicates school policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors to ensure their understanding of policies and potential violation consequences.
10. Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by the Security Director.
11. Abides by Security Department guidelines, directives and post orders.
12. Keeps current on campus conditions by responding to email communications addressed directly to the Security Officer or Security Department.
13. Assists with student arrivals and departures, via bus or parent /caregiver to ensure a safe and orderly flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Other Duties
1. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director, Assistant Executive Director, Director of Security and/or Security Manager.
2. Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times by wearing UNIS approved uniform and practicing good grooming habits.
3. Respects the diversity, culture, and customs of all UNIS stakeholders including staff, students, faculty, parents, vendors, visitor and guests of the school.
Job Specifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to possess the skills listed below which are representative of the knowledge and qualifications required by the position.
Required Skills

5. Must represent UNIS in a positive and professional manner.
6. Possess keen observation skills including the ability to observe and recall faces, names, voices, descriptive characteristics and facts of incidents and places.
7. Possess the interpersonal skills to intervene in verbal or physical altercations on school property.
8. Must have the physical ability to quickly travel up or down multiple flights of stairs.
9. Ability to physically subdue and detain a subject.
10. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
11. Ability to use appropriate defense measures to protect self or others in adverse situations.
12. Ability to administer first aid / CPR in emergency situations.
13. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a diverse setting both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts and feedback.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
1. High school diploma (or equivalency)
2. Two (2) years experience in either law enforcement, military, corporate security or other first responder agency such as Emergency Medical Service or Fire Fighter.
3. Experience in a school/academic campus environment highly preferred.
4. Must be a certified Security Guard by NYS Department of Licensing Services with a valid 8 and 16 hour NYS security card.
5. Valid CPR/AED certification.
6. General understanding of basic physical and electronic security measures including card access, CCTV, Radio Communications, Crime Prevention and Security industry best practices.
7. Basic understanding of Emergency Preparedness and Response procedures.
8. Basic computer skills including word processing, e-mail, and live news coverage and reporting.
Work Environment
Duties are normally performed inside a school/classroom environment and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to navigate a variety of settings as needed to identify environmental sustainability issues and solutions.
Evaluation Annual Evaluation conducted by the Director of Security
Annual Salary Range of $40,405 to $63,542.
