Director of Modern Languages

Position Purpose
The purpose of the Director of the Modern Languages Department (MLD) is to spearhead the department, offering visionary leadership and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in language teaching practices. This role involves driving professional development initiatives grounded in the latest pedagogical research to elevate instructional quality. The Director will remain at the forefront of evolving trends and challenges within the field of language education, introducing innovative strategies to invigorate the teaching team.
A key aspect of this position is to facilitate collaboration among language teachers throughout the three divisions of the school, ensuring alignment in teaching methodologies and assessment practices to foster a cohesive and comprehensive learning environment. The Director will play a pivotal role in creating a unified understanding of the curriculum's goals and content among faculty members. Additionally, the Director is responsible for ensuring the seamless integration and progression of the language curriculum across different grade levels and subjects, promoting both horizontal and vertical coherence in the students' learning journey.
The Director of Modern Languages will also be instrumental in integrating cutting-edge assessment practices, aligning them with the latest educational standards to accurately measure and enhance student learning outcomes. They will champion the adoption of innovative and equitable assessment methodologies, ensuring that they reflect contemporary approaches to language acquisition and proficiency, thereby supporting diverse learner needs and promoting inclusivity within the curriculum.
The Director of the MLD is a member of the School’s Leadership Team and will be actively involved as a change agent while implementing the major recommendations and goals of the strategic plan. This role will be supported by Team Leaders and Coordinators throughout UNIS and will report to the Executive Director.
Position Responsibilities
  • Establish and communicate a clear vision for language learning at UNIS.
  • Collaborate with Team Leaders and Coordinators to ensure alignment of the language learning curriculum across all three school divisions.
  • Utilize pedagogical and assessment data to enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Coordinate and administer student placement testing for appropriate language class assignment.
  • Provide coaching and modeling to foster teacher leadership and professional growth.
  • Assist teachers in locating and utilizing relevant teaching resources.
  • Design, deliver, and recommend professional development opportunities tailored to the needs of language teachers.
  • Offer guidance and support to all department members.
  • Facilitate the integration of government-sponsored language teachers into the international education environment.
  • Encourage self-reflection, facilitate discussions, and identify avenues for professional development.
  • Collaborate with government officials sponsoring language teachers to ensure alignment with UNIS requirements and teacher qualifications.
  • Develop extracurricular language programs to enhance communication skills and engage the student body beyond regular school hours.
Managing and Leading the Learning
  • Promote and cultivate a collaborative and collegial working culture within the Modern Languages Department.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective communication channels among teachers, students, parents, and school administration within the MLD.
  • Organize departmental meetings to support teaching and learning objectives, ensuring timely dissemination of relevant curriculum information to optimize student learning outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Principals to conduct teacher appraisals, evaluations, and provide constructive feedback to enhance teaching practices within the MLD.
  • Work closely with Team Leaders and Coordinators to develop comprehensive course descriptions, determine language proficiency levels, allocate teaching resources effectively, and facilitate appropriate student placement.
  • Oversee and manage the budget for the Modern Languages Department, ensuring responsible allocation of resources to support departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Lead the recruitment process for the MLD, identifying and attracting qualified language educators to support the department's objectives and maintain high teaching standards.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Hold an Advanced Degree in Language Learning or Educational Leadership.
  • Possess a minimum of five years of leadership experience, with a preference for experience in modern language education.
  • International educational experiences outside the US are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of successful language teaching, curriculum development, and assessment.
  • Preferred experience in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, either as a teacher or administrator.
  • Ability and experience to speak and teach a minimum of two languages proficiently.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, inspirational, and creative.
  • Understanding of teaching modern languages to a diverse multicultural student body.
  • Ability to effectively utilize data to inform and improve the teaching and learning of modern languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and maximize their expertise.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Capacity to think strategically and align departmental goals with broader institutional objectives.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT
The initial contract will be for a period of two years, with an option to extend. The contract is renewable at the discretion of the Executive Director. Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
