Ultima Genomics is Hiring a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer Near Fremont, CA

We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our team!

Play an important role in developing next generation sequencing products that have a major impact on the medical and life sciences field. Work on multidisciplinary systems that involve thermal, fluidics, machine design, and bio-chemical processes. This position will require a broad engineering skillset, significant hands-on work, and excellent organization/communication skills.

Work with HW, systems, Optics, Chemistry and Bio teams. Own both Process and HW development.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Work with molecular biology, chemistry, systems engineering, product, and executive teams to define specifications for new products, modules, and processes.
  • Invent new sequencing and sample prep products from ideation to productization.
  • Design key hardware modules, including detailed design work and drawings.
  • Drive integration of hardware, software, electrical, mechatronics, molecular biology and chemical processes to deliver fully functional end products.
  • Work closely with the molecular biology and chemistry teams to optimize key processes, which may require wet lab and hardware testing.
  • Synthesize experimental data and clearly communicate results.
  • Present high-level information to executive team.
  • Lead design, validation, and transfer to manufacturing of complex instrument sub-systems with focus on fluidics transfer, thermals, chemistry, and consumables.
  • Contribute individually, and mentor junior engineers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 15 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of biotech instrumentation, devices, and technologies.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in fluid mechanics and industrial fluidic processes (like mixing, jetting, spraying, dispensing), thermodynamics, and Heat Transfer.
  • Knowledge of fluidics and hydronic components such as syringe pumps, diaphragm pumps, peristaltic pumps, rotary shear valves, solenoid valves, bonded manifolds, automated pipette systems, fitting selection (like IDEX, DIBA, push-to-connect, barbed, compression, various types of threaded, etc.), flow meters, liquid level and presence sensors).
  • Experience designing complex systems with stringent reliability requirements, conducting accelerated lifetime testing, Experience with statistical based design of experiments and using statistical analysis and data analysis programs (JMP, MATLAB, Microsoft Excel).
  • Knowledge of chemical interaction on materials, corrosion mechanisms, corrosion mitigation strategies .
  • Experience with a wide range of manufacturing processes (precision machining, plastics molding, rubber/silicone molding, sheet metal forming, welding, precision tube forming, extrusions, metal casting, 3D printing and other additive manufacturing).
  • Knowledge of fluidic temperature control systems and components.
  • Expert 3D CAD user, SolidWorks experience preferred.

At Ultima Genomics, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays between $175,000 and $190,000, if performed in California, and your actual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits.
