UL is Hiring a Battery Systems Engineer Near Raleigh, NC

We have an exciting opportunity for a Battery Systems Engineer at UL Standards and Engagement.

This is a hybrid role open to candidates who can commute two days a week to the offices in either Evanston, IL or Raleigh, NC.

The Battery Systems Engineer will support the development, revision, and maintenance of safety standards within the areas of batteries, electrification, and alternative energy to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. With a specialized focus on battery energy storage, the Battery Systems Engineer will apply their comprehensive knowledge to address aspects such as battery degradation, electrochemical performance, and behavior modeling. As a subject matter expert, the Battery Systems Engineer will synthesize scientific insights and research development discoveries into actionable strategies to support the advancement of ULSE standards and refine testing methodologies.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Battery Systems Engineer, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL Standards and Engagement as you:

  • Leverage expertise in engineering and regulatory compliance to advance the technical content of electrification standards, and guide the development, revision, and maintenance of these standards. 
  • Serve as a technical lead for projects and initiatives within the battery, electrification, and alternative energy program area.
  • Apply project management practices and techniques to oversee deliverables and ensure execution of project execution.
  • Analyze products, standards, and testing methodologies to gather insights and inform the preparation and composition of gap analyses, testing procedures and technical reports. 
  • Lead the dissemination of related technical information with domestic and international partners. 
  • Provide technical training to other colleagues as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent ULSE at industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows. 
  • Continuously monitor industry trends, and maintain deep understanding of industry landscape, advancements in research and emerging technologies to enhance the effectiveness and innovation of safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as directed. 

What makes you a great fit:

The ideal candidate will bring several qualities to the team, including:

  • Strong command of engineering, technical principles, practices, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in electrical systems, products, components, and applications, with specialization in e-mobility, batteries, clean energy, and or electrification.
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience managing projects across different industries and complexities, using applicable project management methodologies and tools.
  • Ability to manage interdependencies and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, both internally and externally, to drive initiatives and achieve shared objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills. Ability to understand and effectively communicate technical information with industry and other stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, such as Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Materials Science or other related field. Advanced degree highly preferred. 
  • Minimum 7 years engineering experience.
  • Extensive experience in battery technology for storage applications, battery systems, and life cycle behavior. 
  • Experience with US and Canadian Standards and Codes, as well as national, regional, and international standardization bodies including UL, ISO, and IEC. 
  • Experience communicating complex information and delivering technical presentations to diverse set if stakeholders, including industry experts and non-experts.
