Performs laboratory safety inspections and assessments to identify and evaluate chemical, physical, and radiation hazards. This position performs routine radiation safety tasks including the following: radiation detection equipment calibration and operational checks, contamination surveys of authorized laboratories utilizing radioactive isotopes, processing radioactive isotope packages, delivering the packages to authorized users, and processing dosimeter badges. Performs laboratory safety inspections. Document and communicate inspection findings. Assists with data and record management for the laboratory safety program. Duties & Responsibilities:
Performs routine radiation safety tasks including the following: radiation detection equipment calibration and operational checks, contamination surveys of authorized laboratories utilizing radioactive isotopes, processing radioactive isotope packages, delivering the packages to authorized users, collecting radioactive waste from research laboratories, processing radioactive waste in EHSO’s waste rooms, performing leak tests of sealed sources as well as maintaining an accurate sealed source inventory, basic laser and analytical x-ray safety tasks, and processing dosimeter badges.
Perform laboratory safety inspections of laboratories. Document and communicate inspection findings. Track hazards to completion. Apprise manager of any hazards requiring immediate escalation.
Assist with the management of a large laboratory and radiation safety dataset including the following: individuals authorized to use radioactive isotopes, individuals authorized to manipulate chemical and biological material in laboratories, individuals authorized to use lasers and analytical x-rays, health and safety training data, radioactive isotope inventories and contamination surveys. Synthesize this data into different formats depending on the purpose and audience.
Carry the on-call safety phone which rotates amongst the full-time safety professionals in the department. Answer questions received on the phone and respond to urgent issues. Participate in monthly safety training sessions to respond to calls most effectively.
