Description

The R&D QEHS Officer will implement the Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety Management System for our R&D activities, including Chicago Innovation Center and scale-up operations. They will oversee the Chicago Innovation Center safety, security, and quality policies and procedures and will be responsible for their enforcement. This position will work with R&D leadership and the EHS department to maintain compliance with company policies and all applicable regulatory standards. This position will report to R&D director and/or Director, EHS&S.

Primary Responsibilities

EHS:

  • Serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for the Chicago Innovation Center, overseeing all chemical-related activities, updating as necessary, and training the rest of the R&D team with all things related to the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Ensure the compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations and requirements.
  • Develop and enhance R&D operations policies and procedures and ensure compliance with EHS standards and regulations.
  • Lead and foster proactive safety programs, trainings, procedures, and culture in compliance with local, state, federal regulations in addition to internal guidelines.
  • Proactively, identify, assess, and effectively mitigate Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) risks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Conduct comprehensive site risk assessments, audits, and EHS inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Analyze injury/incident data and perform root cause analysis to implement preventative measures.
  • Ensure proper management and safe disposal of all chemicals/materials in the laboratory (hazardous, special, non-hazardous wastes, and other wastes).
  • Control all incoming chemicals and outgoing products and processes to ensure a safe work environment in the lab and pilot facilities.
  • Owner of the site emergency response procedures and leader of the site emergency response team for the Chicago Innovation Center.

Quality:

  • Develop R&D critical elements of quality and train all laboratory and scale-up staff
  • Responsible for laboratory equipment. Keeping track of inventory and maintenance, scheduling service when necessary and tracking instrument reliability via control charts. Obtain quotes and submit purchase requisitions.
  • Maintains and tracks laboratory supply inventory. Checks stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Ensures lab users have been trained properly on all laboratory equipment, in addition revising training procedures as need arises.
  • Coordinates installation of all new lab equipment, including but not limited to electrical work, coordination with IT, space requirements, and training.
  • Proactively leads initiatives to improve the efficiency, reliability and productivity of the laboratory processes and experimental methods, including automation.
  • Manages the chemical inventory, including but not limited to purchasing, receiving, and disposal.
  • Works with building facilities and maintenance to ensure the laboratory is in good upkeep and any repairs/renovations are performed in a timely manner.
  • Develops metrics for the lab operation covering safety, quality/reliability, experimental output.

Qualifications

  • 10-15 Years safety and quality responsibility experience in an R&D laboratory environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in: Chemistry, Safety Management, Engineering, or technically related field required.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations and guidelines for laboratory and industrial activities.
  • Demonstrated analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Risk-management and mitigation mindset
  • Must be willing to be on call and respond to on-site incidents or accidents outside of normal work hours periodically.
  • Regular meetings at other MonoSol facilities in Indiana (Portage, Duneland and LaPorte).

Physical Location: Chicago, IL (expected Q3 2024 – beyond); Merrillville, IN (present – Q3 2024).
