12 Hour Shifts - 7p - 7a

Week 1 - 36 hours

Week 2 - 48 hours

Every Other Weekend Off

Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183 bed acute care and residential facility. For more than 30 years Poplar Springs Hospital has been guided by its mission of helping those who need the full continuum of behavioral health services. Our facility offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through our acute programs, adolescent residential programs, as well as programs for active duty military. Poplar Springs Hospital is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina. We have a new opening for a Night Shift Supervisor. The Shift Supervisor will provide clinical leadership and supervision to direct care staff. Works in association with the Director of Operations, DON, and EDRS to ensure consistency in care provided by the residential care staff. Implements programming and provides ongoing training and supervision to create and maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu. Coordinates and assigns direct care staff to the units facilitates accurate communication among flex pool staff. Assists with daily time and attendance.

Qualifications

Position Requirements:

Individual must demonstrate leadership ability, the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, strong oral and written communication skills. Must possess knowledge of therapeutic relationships as relates to adolescents, therapeutic processes, adolescent growth and development, limit setting and behavior management, crisis management of aggressive behavior and CPR. An individual must be able to perform each Essential Function of the job satisfactorily. Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Valid driver’s license in good standing per UHS Transportation policy strongly preferred
  • American Heart Association CPR Required (offered on-site)
  • Handle With Care Required (offered on-site)

Education/Experience:

  • Prefer a Bachelor degree in social work or psychology. Minimum of a high school diploma / G.E.D.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working in a residential facility for children, of which one year must be supervisory. Five years of experience working with children, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to verbally de-escalate and physically restrain when necessary. Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations such as being verbally or physically confronted in a threatening or aggressive manner; must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot traffic; ability to handle interruptions often and be able to move from one task to another; must be flexible and not easily frustrated in dealing with differences of opinions.

Individual must be able to remain on his/her feet for long periods of time. This position requires frequent walking around the building to supervise staff or assist staff during a crisis. Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken word during activities in which they must convey detail or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips. Hearing to perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction; ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound. Perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands and fingers.

Individual must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and to be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction that will enable people in the role to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe patients within the facility and in therapeutic activities. While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as they work predominantly inside.

Must be able to set and maintain therapeutic distance with clients; maintain therapeutic boundaries during treatment and following discharge.

General Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Services.
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Basic clerical skills, basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.) Computer skills helpful.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to problem solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning

Skills:

  • Human behavior or principles of psychology preferred including therapeutic relationships & processes, age specific growth & development, limit setting, crisis & behavior management.
