Career-Seasonal positions are subject to periods of non-pay . Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.

The typical season for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is mid-January-December but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Duties

The primary purpose of this position is to perform work of limited scope or difficulty involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities and to assist journeyman or higher graded maintenance workers in performing more difficult assignments associated with occupations such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, roofing, painting and other related trades.

Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury.

Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding.

Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc.

May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card : You may be required to complete training and obtain / maintain a government charge card with travel and / or purchase authority.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and : (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school;
  • or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education;

or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors :

Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. Must possess a valid state driver license (SCREEN OUT)

Maintenance Workers at this level perform maintenance worker duties associated with more than one trade such as : carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, etc.

painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces);

plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.

electrical repairs including removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures;

Must possess a valid State Driver's license (SCREEN OUT)

Knowledge of Equipment, Assembly Installation, Repair, etc

Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)

Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)

Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment (inc. Use of Measuring Instruments. PD minimally supports element)

Knowledge of Materials
