About the Site

Located at the heart of Stags Leap District, the original Stags’ Leap Winery (est. 1893) continues a proud winemaking heritage in the prestigious appellation that bears the winery name. At this 240-acre estate, a unique terroir and an ideal microclimate support a classical standard of viticulture, land use and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was a century ago. 

About the Role

This position supervises a full-time cellar crew of up to 8 employees and up to 14-person harvest staff. This position also works full time as an upper-level member of our luxury cellar crew carrying out all the duties of a cellar worker executing all grape, juice, and wine movements from crush to the bottle.

Duties include and not limited to crush equipment and press operation, barrel work, topping, tank racking, wine transfers, chemical additions, sanitation, fining, filtering, forklift operation and bottling.

There are several key areas of responsibility:

PRODUCTION

  • Management of Cellar department production. Under direction of winemaking staff, carry out special orders, directions, and handling/treatment of grapes and wines.
  • Responsible for all seasonal cellar activities from grape receiving to completion of all wine blends for bottling. Coordinate bottling schedule with winemakers and supply chain. 
  • Manage and supervise on-site mobile bottling activities, including temp employees staffing. 
  • Responsible for upkeep/maintenance of all cellar equipment.
  • Managing cellar supplies and consumables based on tonnage forecast and types of wines produced each vintage.
  • Lay out daily/weekly work schedule in conjunction with winemakers. 
  • Work with winemakers/research staff on projects.
  • Make production decisions as needed to maintain workflow and efficiency, within establish winemaking guidelines and set of procedures.
  • Supervise employee work activities throughout the day. Enforce company policy and all safety rules/regulations. 
  • Order and organize cellar equipment, supplies and gases. 
  • Responsible for regular physical inventory of bulk wine, dry goods, additives, and chemicals. 
  • Operates forklift as required.
  • When necessary, performs cellar operation such as, but not limited to: grape receiving and processing, yeast and chemical additions, fermentation management, Pump over, drain and press, barrel work, wine transfers, fining, filtration, wine bottling preparation, bulk wine shipping, 
  • Provides lab with wine/juice samples for analysis as required.
  • Develop with other managers sanitation procedures and ensure all sanitation practices are followed in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Regular review and devise improvements for winery SOP’s in collaboration with winemaking team and cellar crew.

SAFETY

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organized work area.
  • Responsible for cellar employee safety training, proper response to emergencies and dealing with injuries if they occur. Report all relevant safety incidents as outlined by TWE HSE team. Complete root cause analysis for all safety incidents.
  • Promote a safety culture amongst the team, advocate and champion TWE safety programs. Actively engage cellar team and seek feedback to continuously improve overall workplace safety.
  • Lead by example and demonstrate safety as a key value.

QUALITY / ENVIRONMENT

  • Responsible for quality control of the Cellar Department.
  • Train employees and enforce HSE policies in the cellar. 
  • Propose and execute environmentally “green” behaviors including water conservation, energy saving and recycling programs. 
  • Active member of HACCP program, supporting annual certification audits as required.
  • Interface with the Property Manager to coordinate repairs, improvements within the Cellar Department.

PEOPLE

Active Team Management

  • Responsible for hiring all FT cellar employees and assist with hiring temps for harvest. 
  • Accountability for all activities of the shift; continuity of the chain of command. Responsible for supervision, management, and discipline of all direct reports. 
  • Ability to approach decision making with TWE DNA, fairness, and transparency as guiding principles.
  • Lead daily communications to ensure necessary production and people information are cascaded.
  • Issue daily work orders/job assignments to cellar personnel. 
  • Manage personnel matters such as staff scheduling, training and discipline, addressing complaints and resolving issues in a timely manner.
  • Attend company meetings and cascade information to cellar team (i.e., education seminars, safety programs, and weekly cellar meetings). 

About You

  • Minimum of 5 years working in luxury winemaking as a supervisor or lead cellar hand at a 50,000-case winery or larger.
  • Fluent Spanish language preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalency and previous cellar experience required. (Solid winery references are a must.)
  • Proficiency in mathematics required. Ability to perform calculations with accuracy.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence neatly and clearly.
  • Must have a working knowledge of cellar winemaking requirements. 
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours as required, with a flexibility to accommodate potential swing or evening shift. 
  • Good communication skills, positive attitude, and ability to excel as a member of a mid-size winery team are essential.
  • Must be able to work under minimal supervision.
  • Reliable transportation and valid CA driver’s license required.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Must be physically able to lift and/or move 55lbs or more, handle cases of wine, climb ladders, and work in a busy production environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

Pay Transparency Disclosure: The base pay range offered for this position is based on a yearly salary of $85,000 to $94,000. Your salary will be prorated to the date you join to the expected completion date January 2025. There is also 20% target project completion bonus based on successful delivery of the project deliverables. These figures represent what we reasonably expect to pay for this position, but the actual compensation offered will depend upon numerous job-related factors, including but not limited to candidate qualifications, skills, experience, education, location, and alignment with market data. Our expectation is that the incumbent will work out of San Francisco Bay Area. If the incumbent works out of another location, the wage rate may fall above or below this range. Treasury reserves the right to modify the range in the future.
