    Calendar/Hours: 45 minutes per day before school on all student attendance days

    SUMMARY:
    District 113 is seeking School Traffic Safety Guards to ensure the safe crossing of students at designated crosswalks before school by alleviating safety risks and unsafe traffic conditions for students crossing intersections and busy streets. The School Safety Guard will also direct traffic in streets, driveways and parking lots. This position reports to the Building Security Director.
    Positions are available to the general public and to all existing District staff whose regular work schedule does not conflict with the time the Traffic Safety Guard will need to be on duty.

    High School diploma or equivalent.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The School Traffic Safety Guard’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Escorts students across designated school crossing zones, verbally instructs students how to safely cross the street properly.
    • Creates the appropriate gap depending upon traffic location and ensures pedestrians cross in an efficient and orderly manner in all weather conditions.
    • Assures the safety of children and motorists, communicates effectively with children, parents and the general public.
    • Reports license number of vehicles that fail to slow down in school crossing zones, or fail to stop for children attempting to cross streets.
    • Reports unsafe traffic conditions and /or safety hazards in school crossing zones and suspicious vehicles or persons noticed hanging around the school area.
    • Communicates safety instructions and directions to students, parents and motorists traveling through the school safety zone.
    • Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person and as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.
    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Able to work with students and adults in a positive manner.
    • Able to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
    • Knowledge of safety procedures, protective devices, telephones and two-way radios.
    • Previous experience working with children, volunteering experience in community service or have experience in an autonomous position where quick thinking and objective decision making skills were required.
    • Requires excellent vision
    • Ability to talk and/or hear, communicate via telephone and two-way radio and stand for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different minimal levels of eye, hand and foot coordination.

    The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet/moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.
