Substitute Bus Driver

Role: Substitute Bus Driver

Reports to: Transportation Director

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Know and follow all policies and procedures of the Thomaston-Upson County Board of Education, Georgia Department of Transportation, and Georgia Department of Driver Services.
  • Adhere to guidelines set forth in the Transportation Department's handbook.
  • Drive any bus assigned and allow the assigned bus to be used as deemed necessary by the Transportation Director or his/her designee.
  • Accept route changes when deemed necessary by the Director, in a positive, teamwork-oriented manner.
  • Follow established policies of the Board of Education and Director with regard to the proper use of leave time.
  • Assist the Director or his designee in emergency situations which involve transporting students, use of bus, etc.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Ensure adherence to appropriate safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies and administrative directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Driver's license must be a Commercial Drivers License, with additional passenger and school bus endorsements
  • Must submit to and pass an annual school bus drivers physical examination, including random drug/alcohol testing.
  • Must meet any other qualifications set by the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Department of Driver Services and the state and local boards of education policies.
  • Must have and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
  • Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students particularly during emergency situations.
