The Town School is a 111 year-old, coeducational Nursery through 8th Grade school of 335 students on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Town School seeks a full-time Leave Replacement for Gr. 1-4 Science Teacher, a full-time Leave Replacement for a 3rd Grade Teacher, and a full-time Substitute Teacher. These positions run concurrently and combine into one opening for the full 2024-25 school year.
The salary for this year-long position is $55,000-60,000 commensurate with experience and degree level.
Grade 1-4 Science Teacher
Leave Replacement August 26 – December 20, 2024
Major Responsibilities:
- Teach Science classes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students (approximately 160 students total) using a hands-on, inquiry-based approach
- Work with 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Science teachers to ensure cohesiveness, appropriate sequencing, and program alignment across the Science curriculum, including building and managing a grade-level spring science community event
- Maintain and care for science classroom insects, plants, animals, and materials
- Work collaboratively with homeroom teachers, the Guidance team, and parents to closely monitor and support student progress
- Differentiate instruction to attend to the needs of individual children
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administration
- Contribute constructively to all faculty discussions and continue to grow professionally
Qualifications:
- Related Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred
- 3-5 years experience teaching elementary students preferred
- Experience teaching Science using a hands-on, inquiry-based approach
- Excellent classroom management and time management skills
- Interest in and experience with coding/educational technology a plus
- Ability to work as a member of the larger Science team
- Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents

- Work collaboratively with co-teacher, grade-level, divisional, and school-wide colleagues for curriculum planning and student support
- Actively partner with parents and Guidance Team to closely monitor and support student progress
- Differentiate instruction to attend to the needs of individual children
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, parents, and administration
- Supportive of Town’s mission and values, and a demonstrated commitment to the aspirations in our school’s Statement on Diversity, Inclusion and Equity.
- Personal characteristics of an outstanding professional: warmth, empathy, discernment, strong organization skills, and a good sense of humor
Qualifications:
- Degree in education
- 2-3 years lead-teaching experience in an elementary setting
- Experience with Readers/Writers Workshop, TERC Investigations, Context for Learning
- Experience incorporating technology in support of student learning
- Passion for teaching young children
- Interest in continued professional development
Full-Time Substitute Teacher
April 1 - June 13, 2025

- Experience in an elementary setting and passion for teaching young children
