Under general supervision, this position performs specialized technical inspection of construction projects and installations in new, existing, and remodeled structures in the following areas of trade certification: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, structural, fire/life safety, and plans examination to determine compliance with the current codes and standards adopted by the Town of Parker. 

*This position performs duties deemed to be safety sensitive. Employees holding this position participate in pre-employment and random drug testing under Town’s policies*

  • Conducts inspections in the following areas of trade certification(s): plumbing, mechanical, electrical, structural, and fire/life safety.
  • Reviews permits, plans, and specifications; confers with customers to assure conformance with adopted codes in specified area of trade certification(s).
  • Assists contractors and the public in the interpretation and application of adopted building codes.
  • Investigates complaints of code violations and enforces correction of defects.
  • Conducts re-inspections to determine if trade deficiencies have been corrected.
  • Prepares and maintains complete and accurate reports, logs, and records of all building inspections and actions taken to achieve compliance with Town of Parker regulations.
  • Provides positive customer service to the public, other Town departments and governmental entities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, certification and/or licensure required. An equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties and meet the necessary employment standards may be considered.

High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of relevant experience in construction or in building trades with work performed in conformance with standard codes. 

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; safe driving record and a minimum of two (2) years of driving history. 

Employees within the Building Inspector position series are eligible to participate in a self-initiated progression for promotional advancement through inspector levels. Below are the distinguishing characteristics of each level:

Building Inspector I:This is an entry-level position within the Building Inspector position series. This position is distinguished from the others within this series by the performance of limited and routine tasks and duties. The Inspector I is typically a training platform for employees having only limited or no directly related work experience.

This level requires the following certification be obtained within one (1) year of hire: 

  • International Code Council (ICC) Certification in Two (2) of the following areas of certification:
    • Building
    • Plumbing
    • Mechanical
    • Electrical
    • Structural
    • Plans Examination

Building Inspector II:

This is a mid-level position within the Building Inspector position series. This position is distinguished from the others within this series by experience, additional certifications, and the performance of the full range of tasks and duties. The Inspector II receives occasional instruction or assistance and is aware of the operating procedures and Divisional policies. 

This level requires two (2) years of building inspection experience. 

This level requires the following certification:

  • Four (4) ICC Certifications in any of the following areas of certification:
    • Building
    • Plumbing
    • Mechanical
    • Electrical
    • Structural
    • Plans Examination

Building Inspector III:

This is an upper-level position within the Building Inspector position series. This position is distinguished from the others within this series by the years of experience, additional certifications, and the performance of the full range of tasks, duties, and special assignments. The Inspector III receives only limited instruction or assistance and is fully aware of the operating procedures and Divisional policies. 

This level requires four (4) years of building inspection experience.

This level requires the following certification:

  • Six (6) ICC Certifications in any of the following areas of certification:
    • Building
    • Plumbing
    • Mechanical
    • Electrical
    • Structural
    • Plans Examination

Employment Standards

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Knowledge of the design, construction, and function of one (1) or more of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, mechanical, structural, equipment and systems, and fire/life safety.
  • Knowledge of municipal building codes and enforcement of codes.
  • Knowledge of possible defects and flaws in building construction relating to the specific area of trade certification and the necessary corrective measures.
  • Skill to identify potential needs and problems with the ability to suggest workable solutions.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of building plans
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key staff members at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while in the field with the ability to follow specific directions.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with builders, contractors, developers, and other members of the public.
  • Ability to work with difficult customers with the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Ability to use modern office equipment and computer applications.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
Hiring Ranges
Building Inspector I
Hiring range: $28.77/hr. - $34.53/hr. Full salary range: $28.77/hr. - $40.28/hr. Building Inspector II Hiring range: $31.08/hr. - $37.29/hr. Full salary range: $31.08/hr. - $43.51/hr. Building Inspector III
Hiring range: $33.56/hr.-$40.28/hr.
Full salary range: $33.56/hr.-$46.99/hr.

Tools & Equipment

Requires frequent use of general office equipment, specialized equipment, ladders, reference materials and an automobile. 

Physical Demands

Requires regular sitting, standing, walking, talking, handling, feeling or operating objects, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Requires occasionally reaching with hands and arms, climbing and balancing. Requires moderate physical activity with heavy lifting, up to fifty (50) pounds and the occasional need to carry, pull, push, or life one hundred (100) pounds with assistance. 

Requires close and distance vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus, allowing a broad field of vision. Requires clear and effective communication; must understand and be understood. The employee must be able to operate a Town-issued vehicle without assistance.

This is a field position. The employee must access development sites and be able to regularly cross sloping and unimproved property to enter buildings that are under construction. The employee must be able to access limited clearance areas such as attics, basements, and crawl spaces. The employee must be able climb ladders and stairs, traverse unfinished roofs, and utilize a lift. 

Environment

Work is frequently performed in outside conditions in all weather conditions. The noise level is usually moderate and may range from moderate to extreme. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, hot and/or cold conditions, or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.
