OVERVIEW:

The Social Service Case Worker handles all inquiries for assistance through The Salvation Army Eastside Corps Community Center. Oversees the assessment for eligibility and generation of financial and material assistance. Does basic problem-solving casework and client referrals. Creates all paperwork and maintains records of cases/clients. Works with the other Social Services agencies to develop inter-agency relationships working within the guidelines of The Salvation Army. Responsible for ordering, disbursing, and maintaining food inventories from other agencies, businesses, and gift in kind.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Answer and/or respond to all Social Service inquires by telephone, emails, or in person.
  • Greet and direct clients and visitors when needed
  • Supervise volunteer assigned to social services and document volunteer hours as needed.
  • Interview, screen and make appointments for those seeking assistance
  • Provide social services to clients, as needed
  • Order and maintain food supplies, plan, and implement the preparation of food boxes
  • Prepare and distribute food boxes/bags
  • Assist with loading and unloading of food donations from van/ truck
  • Keep Food Pantry and assigned refrigerator and freezer space organized with loading/re-loading food and goods and rotate food for distribution according to expiration dates
  • Keep area, inside and outside of Social Services, clean and orderly. Eliminate any safety hazards
  • Brake down and stack all cardboard
  • Coordinate the Christmas assistance program and assist with other seasonal programs, community programs, projects, and office tasks when necessary or requested by the commanding officer or program supervisor
  • Prepare client files and records, making copies of all necessary identification and information regarding client circumstances. Maintain current and accurate computer files and statistical data
  • Timely and accurate reporting of monthly and yearly stats to appropriate programs and agencies
  • Keep accurate record of funding received and disbursed, monitoring the financial status of all Social Service programs, with oversight from the Business Manager.
  • Complete reporting on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis as needed.
  • Work with various grants, contracts, fundings for social services which will include communication with vendors and management companies.
  • Perform general clerical duties to include but not limited to: photocopying, faxing, mailing and filing as needed.
  • Attend Community Agency Meetings. Keep up-to-date on changes in community agencies procedures and regulations.
  • Work with other Corps Social Service caseworkers and network with the Social Service agencies outside of The Salvation Army
  • Work with the Business Manager and Administrative Specialist, and in coordination with Division Headquarters, to develop funding sources and write effective grants for resources to support and expand various programs.
  • Responsible for the proper recording, disbursing, and reporting of in-kind donations.
  • Be available as a "fill-in" driver for the after-school program, kettle routes, and other Salvation Army programs, if needed
  • Provide professional case management for clients with more serious long-term needs such as housing assistance, utility assistance, and food bank certification.
  • Provide professional referral services for needs that The Salvation Army cannot meet directly
  • Attend staff and Advisory Council meetings, training, and conferences as recommended and approved by commanding Officer.
  • Conduct assessments as needed to determine whether services offered are relevant
  • Provide input to the budget process for the social service department and keep expenditures within approved budgetary line items
  • Follow all fiscal and financial policies and procedures implemented by the Salvation Army Eastside Corps Community Center.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with other Corps personnel.
  • Regular attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
  • Enter and update work schedule into Outlook.

GENERAL NOTES AND PRECAUTIONS

  • Use proper methods when lifting. If an item is too heavy, get help
  • When working with volunteers, clear communication and supervision is required
  • All vandalism or building damage must be reported to the Commanding Officer
  • Any injuries must be reported immediately to the Commanding Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College degree preferred; high school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in social work or related field preferred
  • Show an ability to deal with physical, emotional, and spiritual needs (either through direct assistance or referral) of the client population
  • Collaborative and interactive experience with King County/Northwest Washington or similar Social Service agencies
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse client population.
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and ability to pass TSA MVR check and in-house driving test. Commercial driver's license preferred with passenger endorsement.
  • Ability to pass background and MVR checks
  • Ability to work with limited or no supervision
  • Ability to work with other staff members and volunteers a must
  • Ability to speak English fluently to communicate with volunteers and clients
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities
  • Have a working knowledge of The Salvation Army's mission or willingness to learn it
  • An understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army's mission, philosophy, and practices
  • Ability to work within the organization and carry out its policies and procedures
  • Have good people skills and a friendly demeanor
  • Basic computer knowledge: Excel, Word. PowerPoint and ability to navigate database applications and use new software programs with basic training.
  • Must have good communication and organizational skills
  • Must be a team-player
  • Must be goal-oriented and self-motivated
  • Capable of maintaining high level of integrity

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, carts, pallet jacks, boxes, crates, and reach overhead
  • Ability to operate telephone, desktop or laptop computer
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary 1 and family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options: An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.

Paid Vacation:

Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays 1 floating holiday per year
