General Statement

Position Summary

In cooperation with the Corps Officer, maintain and develop the vibrant worshipping community within the bilingual and multiethnic community of San Luis Obispo. Assist in developing social, spiritual, and musical programs which are central to the Salvation Army beliefs. Develop community outreach programs which relate to and meet the needs of people who speak Spanish as their primary language.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain and develop a vibrant ministry outreach to those who primarily speak Spanish and live within the San Luis Obispo community.
  • Preach the gospel of Jesus Christ as needed.
  • Be a Spanish translator for the Corps Officer and staff as needed during worship services, Bible Studies and throughout the week including outreach events.
  • Support as directed, existing spiritual and social programming at SLO.
  • Create opportunities to engage with community through networking with existing clientele, other agencies, and other Christian churches within service area.
  • Help coordinate activities for children and teens primarily through existing Salvation Army programs, including Sunday school, Junior Soldiers, Corps Cadets, and SAY Troops.
  • Assist with the development of summer programs including Day Camp or Vacation Bible School.
  • Promote attendance within the community of TSA summer camps, youth, and young adult programs.
  • Reach out to adult family members to develop a worshipping faith community and advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the ministry of The Salvation Army.
  • Recruit and train lay leaders to assist in development of ministry outreach.
  • Teach Bible study and disciple new recruits for enrollment as Adherents, Junior, and Senior Soldiers
  • Develop and deliver a ministry to help meet the needs of men.
  • Grow the worship band and the other music sections to support ministry at the San Luis Obispo Corps.
  • Manage and maintain all related statistical reports, activity records, and records for use of assigned vehicle when necessary.
  • Assist with Christmas kettle program, as well as seasonal programs for Easter, VBS, Thanksgiving, Back-to-school, and Christmas. This may include pick up and distribution of toys and food.
  • Understanding of children/vulnerable adults' safety protocol (Protect the Mission) as per Salvation Army policy and procedure and required mandated reporter.
  • Maintain a professional manner at all times, upholding the integrity of The Salvation Army.
  • Attend staff and program related meetings, conferences, and training as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army.

Experience
Must be Bilingual-English/ Spanish. Must be a Salvationist in good standing. Have worked in Salvation Army Christian ministry with children and families. Able to advance the spiritual development of children and adults. Able to preach and lead a Salvation Army meeting in the absence of the Officer. Basic knowledge of computers and use of various "office" programs. (required)
