Damien High School seeks a Director of Debate for the 2024-25 school year. Damien High School has a long-standing tradition of excellence in Policy Debate with teams competing annually in local and national tournaments. In addition to coaching, the Director of Debate will teach 3-4 sections of Introductory and Advanced Debate courses during the school year.

Inspired by St. Damien of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Damien High School, an all-boys Catholic school, develops men of Service, Scholarship, and Faith, prepared to engage in a dynamic global society.

Damien High School is a nationally recognized leader in academic excellence and is well-respected for developing the talents and potential of young men. Damien High School is owned and operated by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA).

The ideal candidate will:

  • Cultivate an inclusive, collaborative, and challenging learning environment that reflects Damien’s Catholic Identity and allows our diverse student body to grow and thrive.
  • Exhibit a passion and knowledge of Policy Debate and implement various pedagogical approaches while teaching/coaching students.
  • Create an environment in the classroom and in all areas of co-curricular responsibility that nurtures the development of the whole student.
  • Show a willingness to engage students to foster a student-centered learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and assistant debate coaches to develop an integrated curriculum and meaningful student learning experiences.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills in maintaining the Debate program budget and coordinating the annual Damien Debate Invitational.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coach daily after school, providing guidance and mentorship to students in the Debate program.
  • Travel and oversee student participation in tournaments, which generally includes overnight travel once a month to maintain a competitive program.
  • Manage tournament entries efficiently using platforms such as tabroom.com.
  • Provide administrative support for the program, including coordinating practice schedules, tournament registration, travel planning, and student billing.
  • Oversee and train assistant coaches to ensure the continued success and growth of the program.

Requirements

Qualifications: Undergraduate and/or graduate degree in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Communication, or a related field; teaching and debate coaching experience preferred.

Wage Range
The rate of pay offered to the selected candidate is based on internal pay policy and budget. New hires are commonly paid at the minimum of the wage range or within the lower part of the range. We consider a number of factors when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, skill sets, experience, training and other department needs.
