The Post and Courier, South Carolina’s premier news source, is seeking an audience development producer with a journalism background to support innovative growth and engagement strategies aimed at reaching new audiences and converting them to loyal subscribers.

The emphasis for this role will be executing foundational audience growth and engagement tactics to grow and engage The Post and Courier’s audiences, and creating on-site subscriber experiences to retain our most loyal readers. The audience growth producer will be the subject matter expert on homepage management, breaking news alerts, newsletters, social media management and SEO. They will be responsible for site optimization and day-to-day oversight of the flow of news coverage coming out of the newsroom. 

The audience development producer will report to The Post and Courier’s audience development editor. They should have some experience managing social media accounts for news organizations, optimizing SEO for news content, strong writing skills, and an ability to think on their feet in a fast-paced environment. Experience working remotely across multiple newsrooms is a plus.

Successful candidates will have a basic understanding of news analytics and be able to make smart decisions based on a combination of data and solid news judgment. 

This position is in-person, based in either one of our newsrooms in Myrtle Beach or Beaufort County, South Carolina.

The Post and Courier is privately held and is investing in its journalism. We began expanding across the state in 2020, seeking to fill a void in news deserts or areas where local news coverage had withered. We now operate Post and Courier newsrooms in multiple South Carolina cities.

Responsibilities:

• Curate our hand-designed homepage, with guidance from analytics, news leadership and your own news judgment. 

• Use analytics to make real-time digital decisions, such as sending a push notification for a story that is being widely read. 

• Support the execution of innovative tactics across social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, in an effort to engage these audiences and develop loyal readers.

• Write and edit newsletters as needed, including our flagship Morning and Evening Roundups. 

• Collaborate across the audience team to execute experiments and share subject matter expertise.

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills and abilities: 

- Some journalism skills and experience in a newsroom environment. 
- Experience understanding and communicating analytics to guide decisions using platforms such as Google Analytics and Marfeel.
- Experience with social media and an understanding of how different types of content excel on different platforms. 
- Ability to multi-task and quickly troubleshoot. 
- A passion for local, state and national news, and a strong awareness of the newsworthiness of a given topic. 
- Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, days, nights and weekends as needed. 
Requirements, minimum education level and experience: 

- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field. 
- At least 1 year of demonstrated journalism experience. 
- Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through.
