Description

The Post and Courier, South Carolina's statewide leader in award-winning news coverage, is looking for a Newsletter Editor to oversee newsletter efforts in our Columbia and Myrtle Beach newsrooms. This full-time position will be based in Columbia.

The Newsletter Editor for Columbia and Myrtle Beach will plan and execute the strategy for select free and paid newsletter products across the state informed by audience metrics, analytics and news judgment. The Newsletter Editor will also support marketing efforts by creating marketing funnel growth through growing the newsletter audiences and supporting overall marketing strategy to grow our paying digital audience.

This position is part of a special project funded by the Knight Foundation aimed at growing our reach and building a stronger subscriber base in two key Post and Courier markets — Columbia, the state capital, and Myrtle Beach, a coastal city known nationally for its beaches and tourism industry. The Newsletter Editor will be key to the success of this special project.

The Post and Courier, a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, values in-depth storytelling, innovative reporting approaches and a commitment to accountability. Based in Charleston, we have expanded throughout the state with reporters and newsrooms in Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill and Spartanburg. While most in the news industry face significant headwinds, The Post and Courier is growing.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategy for The Post and Courier's free and paid newsletter products in the Columbia and Myrtle Beach markets that is informed by audience metrics, usability and news judgment
  • Create habit-forming email experiences
  • Build, grow and nurture our newsletter subscriber base
  • Work with reporters and editors to establish the tone, format and frequency of each newsletter and define best practices
  • Experiment with new forms of storytelling and information delivery via email
  • Be a champion for newsletters
  • Track KPIs for all assigned newsletters, and make recommendations based on available data to increase engagement, growth and ultimately revenue
  • Ensure newsletter are integrated into all of our relevant digital products, including but not limited to, website sections, contests and event sign ups
  • Work closely with audience development, marketing and sales teams to improve existing newsletters and find opportunities to build audiences and grow revenue
  • Ensure advertising best practices are followed in all newsletter creatives
  • Establish and follow procedure to verify correct advertising is present in each newsletter prior to sending
  • Communicate with newsroom leaders and other departments to keep various teams informed of product enhancements, success metrics, rollouts and other activity with newsletter products
  • Work with newsroom to support new newsletter launches, including developing end-to-end marketing plans to grow lists and promote new content
  • Review and report conversion data for newsletters subscriber to paying subscribers
  • Assist with the creation and deployment of marketing emails and other creatives, including creation of segmented email messaging funnels
  • Own the assigned paid newsletter, including marketing strategy, growth and newsroom collaboration
  • Developing marketing strategy to grow revenue associated with paid newsletters including increasing leads, creating and distributing marketing emails, engaging and soliciting feedback from current subscribers, ensure all benefits are being provided and other responsibilities as defined
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong news judgment; a journalistic foundation as an editor or reporter is preferred
  • Strong marketing experience; experience in agency or in-house marketing preferred
  • A demonstrated record of success in growing and engaging digital audiences
  • Experience formatting HTML, creating or using email templates and sending email newsletters
  • Experience with graphic design for digital assets
  • Experience in editing web-based page layouts, understand design, have experience coordinating mass mailings and editing/copywriting for email based publications
  • Experience leading fast-paced projects that involve editorial, marketing, development and other resources
  • The ability to move projects forward in a collaborative environment
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects at one time
  • A strategic and creative thinker with a passion for experimentation
  • Reliable access to internet services

Qualifications


Requirements, minimum education level, and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications or related field
  • 2-3 years demonstrated journalism experience
  • 1-2 years demonstrated marketing experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with excellent follow through
  • Flexible schedule may be required to meet seasonality of some newsletters
  • Ability to work independently remotely, if necessary, in a suitable workspace that meets safety guidelines

Physical Requirements, Work Environment and Travel

Regularly required to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time. The job requires reaching with hands and arms, bending and stooping; light to moderate lifting of 15-30 pounds. The job requires hearing, speaking and writing with close eye work on a computer screen.

The worker is generally subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

Travel may be required occasionally. Dependable transportation and a valid South Carolina driver's license and proof of insurance are required.
