Do you have a love meal planning, have a strong food prep background, and a knack for organizing? Is your heart drawn to serving those most in need? If so, join the team at The Beacon; a day resource center for people who are experiencing homelessness. We are currently seeking a Volunteer Services Specialist to provide direct assistance to our Volunteer Coordinator who oversees the over one hundreds of volunteers that daily provide essential need services for our guests. You would oversee the operations of the kitchen, showers, and laundry areas daily and would be a point of contact for our volunteers. To make lasting impact on your community, apply now!

  • 1st shift. Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday 7:30 am - 4:30 pm.

Daily Activities

  • Assists in providing appropriate support, orientation, and training for volunteers.
  • Acts as a go-to person for volunteers’ inquiries and regularly checksin on volunteers during shift. 
  • Communicates with Volunteer Coordinator about volunteer program needs. 
  • Assists with data collection and monthly report preparations.

Kitchen Management

  • Manages general operations and inventory of the kitchen and food supply.
  • Ensures proper condition, safety, and cleanliness of kitchen and food storage areas; communicates with Volunteer Coordinator about necessary maintenance work orders. 
  • Plans, purchases, prepares, picks-up, and serves nutritious foods for breakfast and lunch within the program budget.
  • Manages food donations, food pantry orders and deliveries, and communication with contracted food vendors. 
  • Creates a menu for volunteers to follow.
  • Labels and dates all incoming food products; monitors and maintains food regulation standards.
  • Purchases kitchen paper products and utensils.
  • Maintains SERV SafeManager Certification.

Showersand Laundry Management

  • Maintainsclean and organized shower and laundry areas.
  • Manages inventory of products, ordering supplies within program budget. 
  • Ensures working order of showers and laundry area; communicates with Volunteer Coordinator about necessary maintenance work orders.

Qualifications:

Education

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Holds SERV Safe Manager Certification or willingness to obtain.

Experience

    • One or more years' experience working with individuals with mental health diagnoses and substance use disorders. 
    • Basic knowledge of kitchen operations and equipment.

Skills

    • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
    • Ability to exert moderate physical effort involving a combination of walking, standing, lifting, stooping, squatting, bending, reaching, pushing, and /or pulling.
    • Ability to follow directions, organize and prioritize work assignments.
    • Ability to collaborate and problem solve with co-workers. 
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • Ability to be flexible and meet the needs of participants and the program.

Other

    • Must have a valid drivers’ license with a driving record indicating a safe driving history acceptable to the company.
