The Open Window School is Hiring a Summer Program Counselor Near Bellevue, WA

Position Overview

Open Window School is a K-8 independent school on Cougar Mountain, centrally located between Bellevue, Issaquah, and Newcastle. For 5 weeks during the summer, Open Window runs an exciting summer program for students entering Kindergarten through 7th grade within the local community.

Our Summer Counselors will support the program by facilitating pre-designed, hands-on theme camps, or assisting faculty with specialty camps. Counselors will lead activity cohorts of 10-12 students in our theme weeks under the direction of our Theme Director and Lead Teachers, supervise lunch and recess, and collaborate with the Theme Director to create a fun and inclusive atmosphere for campers. Counselors will also assist with our Before and After Care program. Both within a team environment and under minimal supervision, our counselors create a safe and engaging space for campers in the program. Counselors will use their unique expertise and experiences to connect with campers through positive social interaction, age-appropriate projects, crafts, and play.


Major Areas of Responsibility/Specific Duties:

  • Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, lead small groups of 8-10 campers through a daily set of pre-designed activities based around the theme for that week.
  • Classroom set-up and clean-up.
  • Manage materials and supplies replenishment in coordination with the Lead Teacher and Theme Week Director.
  • Provide support to Lead Teachers during Specialty class time.
  • Supervise non-class times – recesses (AM/PM and lunch) and Before or After Care.
  • Monitor campers’ behavior and redirect negative behavior.
  • Other duties as needed and assigned.

Qualities & Qualifications:

The following skills, knowledge, and abilities may enhance an applicant’s candidacy.

  • 18 years or older
  • Experience working with K-8 students.
  • Experience with after-school or summer programs.
  • Interest in youth development and engaging with youth.
  • CPR/First Aid Certified (will be paid for by school if not currently certified at time of hire).
  • Maintain cordial, flexible, and professional relationships with colleagues, students and parents.
  • Engage with others using constructive communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Pay attention to detail and time management.
  • Employ a positive, collaborative, and problem-solving attitude.
  • Provide a welcoming environment to students and serve as an enthusiastic role model for them in everything you do at camp.
  • Communicate, motivate, and interact with students in a supportive and inclusive manner during camp and activity time.

Position Details:

Manager: Summer Auxiliary Programs Manager

Compensation: $25 per hour

Position Classification: Seasonal; June 24-August 2

Hours: 7:30-4:00; 8:30-5:00; or 9:30-6:00 – exact schedule will be determined between employee and manager

Training: Hired counselors are required to attend the in-person training session at Open Window School - June 24-28.
