The Knowledge House is Hiring a Careers Teaching Assistant (East Coast) Near Bronx, NY

TKH General Overview
The Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will lift their communities out of poverty. 
The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-24 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 1,900 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design.

Role Overview:
Reporting to the Career Lead Instructor, the Career Teaching Assistant will be responsible for leading tasks related to career class instruction and fellow support including class facilitation, assignment review and grading, curricular development support, and holding office hours with fellows.The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with a problem-solving orientation and curious mindset who communicates effectively and possess the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment that prioritizes high accountability and respect for individual learning needs.
  • Support learners of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Manage a high volume of assignment review and grading through superlative time management skills
  • Facilitate workshops based on a provided curriculum with guidance from the Career Lead Instructor.
 
As a growing organization, we expect that the specific needs and job description will shift over time and other duties may be assigned by the Career Lead Instructor and Manager of Curricula and Instruction.  
Key Areas of Responsibility
  • Assisting Teaching and Student Support
    • Assist in the conducting of 1 weekly virtual course to a large, multi-track cohort of Innovation Fellows between the hours of 5:30 - 9:30pm EST on Thursdays between September and June.
    • Assist in the conducting of 1 monthly 60-minute workshop during evening hours to a large class of fellows from both the Innovation Fellowship and Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship during the academic year.
    • Assistant in the conducting of 1 weekly virtual course to a large cohort of KKCF fellows between the hours of 10:00am - 3:30pm EST during June, July, and August.
    • All assistant duties include management tasks including drafting and posting assignments in the LMS, uploading resources and class recordings to LMS, taking attendance, support of instruction, and implementation of both guided and unguided activities via Zoom.
    • Review student feedback and troubleshoot class issues during team meetings.
    • Review and grade assignments and provide feedback in accordance with rubrics and lead instructor guidance.
    • Hold weekly office hours with students who need extra support.
  • Class Reporting Duties and Deliverables
    • Work with the lead instructor to compile all student attendance, incident reports, assignment submission rates and grades.
    • Prepare to review reports during weekly Track Meetings.
  • Recruitment & Pretraining Support
    • Help recruitment staff in supporting info sessions and workshops as needed.
    • Support recruitment with occasional applicant interviews during recruitment season as needed.
 
Schedule Requirements:
Candidates must be available for the specific weekly events described below:
  • Weekly class times (Innovation Fellowship): Thursday 5:30-9:30pm EST, September - June
  • Weekly class times (KKCF Fellowship): Monday and Thursday 10:00am - 3:30pm EST, June - August.
  • Weekly department meeting: Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm EST (strongly preferred)
  • Office hours with fellows: Friday & weekend (time of day is flexible)
The remaining weekly hours are flexible.

Qualifications:
 
Experience
  • Working knowledge of workforce development, adult education, and/or eLearning curriculum design, with preference to those who have undergone career training similar to TKH’s content and approach
  • Proficiency in Google Apps, Google Classroom and MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) desired; Experience with Canvas LSMS a plus.
  • Experience working in classroom environments
  • Excellent time management
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and people skills
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or tutoring is a plus
  • Excellent writing skills for content creation activities
  • LMS understanding (Classrooms, Attendance, Grades, etc..)
 
Skills & Approach to Work
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Google Suite, Google Classroom and other Learning Management Systems
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive communication skills, including public speaking abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to independently produce high quality work, delegate, problem-solve, and ask for help when needed.
