Data Science Teaching Assistant

Start Date: May 2023Employment Type: This is a part-time position. A flexible schedule including occasional weekend hours is required.Location: New York City preferred, Atlanta, Los Angeles, NewarkReports to: Manager of Curricula and Instruction TKH General OverviewThe Knowledge House’s mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will lift their communities out of poverty.The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education­-to-­employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching young adults aged 16­-24 skills to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact. Headquartered in the South Bronx, the poorest congressional district, TKH has served more than 1,900 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design. Role Overview:Reporting to the Manager of Curricula and Instruction, the Data Science Teaching Assistant will be responsible for leading tasks related to technical class instruction and fellow support including class facilitation, assignment review and grading, curricular development support, and holding office hours with fellows.The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader with a problem-solving orientation and curious mindset who communicates effectively and possess the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment that prioritizes high accountability and respect for individual learning needs.
  • Support learners of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Manage a high volume of assignment review through superlative time management skills.
  • Provide meaningful guidance and instructional support to learners with diverse skill levels and experience with technology.
As a growing organization, we expect that the specific needs and job description will shift over time and other duties may be assigned by the Manager of Curricula and Instruction. Key Areas of Responsibility
  1. Assisting Instruction and Course Delivery
    1. Assist in delivering weekly technical curricula Monday-Wednesday to a cohort of data science fellows, including evening instruction during the hours of 5:30pm-9:30pm ET.
    2. Assistant in the conducting of 1 weekly virtual course to a cohort of KKCF high school-aged fellows between the hours of 10:00am - 3:30pm EST during June, July, and August.
    3. Assist in all classroom management tasks, instruction, and implementation of both guided and unguided labs via Zoom.
    4. Manage a calendar/booking system for student office hours, 4 hours a week or as needed via email, phone, web conferencing, and/or in-person tutoring and meetings.
    5. Review Student Weekly Feedback and provide insight on areas that need to be either reimagined or where students need additional support.
    6. Attend weekly teaching and learning meeting to receive updates, discuss feedback, and participate in critical team discussion.
 
  1. Student Support & Evaluation
    1. Grade student assignments, labs, and assessments
    2. Meeting weekly deadlines and updating GPAs before the new week
    3. Compile all student attendance, incident reports, lab submission rates and grades, weekly assignment submission rates and grades, and project deliverable submission rates and grades
    4. Attend weekly track meeting to discuss support strategies for fellows in your track, review student attendance reports, grades, and classroom feedback.
    5. Facilitate weekly review sessions with your track.
    6. Support students who have entered the pre-training program by monitoring and answering questions via Slack and occasionally providing 1-1 help sessions via web conferencing and/or in-person.
    7. Support students and facilitate class sessions during certification prep period.
 
  1. Curriculum Tasks
    1. Assist with the creation of unit plans, lesson plans, and presentation slides, to be prepared for class several weeks in advance.
    2. Support in creating and maintaining instructional materials including lectures, readings, assignments, exams, labs, projects, etc. for use during in-person and/or virtual settings
    3. Assist the recruitment and student success team with vetting applicant's baseline technical knowledge to inform selection needed.
Schedule Requirements:Candidates must be available for the specific weekly events described below:
  • Weekly class times (Innovation Fellowship): Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 5:30-9:30pm EST, September - June
  • Weekly class times (KKCF Fellowship): Mondays - Thursdays 10:00am - 3:30pm EST, June - August (exact schedule TBD)
  • Weekly department meeting: Tuesdays 4:00-5:00pm EST (preferred but not required)
  • Office hours with fellows: Friday & weekend (time of day is flexible)
The remaining weekly hours are flexible.Qualifications:Experience
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field and/or Bootcamp completion is preferred
  • Proficient in Python3 Programming, Git, and Basic Bash Commands
  • Experience with Jupyter Notebooks
  • Experience with SQL, Flask/Django, Numpy, Scipy, and Pandas is a major plus
  • Familiarity working with JSON data
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, beginner JavaScript, UX/UI, wireframing, web design, graphic design, computational thinking
  • Familiarity with statistical and other mathematical concepts (regression analysis, linear algebra concepts)
  • Skilled at problem-solving and algorithmic thinking
  • Experience working in classroom environments, teaching or working with young adult or adult learners is preferred.
  • Excellent time management
  • Strong communications, and people skills
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or tutoring is a plus
  • Excellent writing skills for content creation activities
  • LMS understanding (Classrooms, Attendance, Grades, etc..)
Skills & Approach to Work
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Google Suite, Google Classroom and other Learning Management Systems
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive communication skills, including public speaking abilities.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment.

Compensation
The compensation for this part-time, contract role is a flat monthly rate of $3,000/month for an expected ~25-hour workweek.
